I am thinking of getting a digital voice recorder to help me memorize information for my classes (especially language classes) for next semester. Anyone here have one or used one? What are the caveats? What should I look for when getting one? The nomad series looks decent, has like a 4 hour model and an 8 hour model. They are expensive though...and ugly. Is there anything sleeker, cheaper, and more powerful?

Get a minidisc player. Cheap, media is small and holds quite a bit (up to 6 hrs of voice recording i think), and youc an use it for music listening. Better than an mp3 player because you don't need to always delete/load songs... just get a bunch of MDs. Also doesn't skip... at least it hasn't skip for me yet, and i use it riding my bike.

I looked at them, but I decided they were too expensive (at least, the models with decent storage/removable media, USB connectivity, and a file organization system that I liked).

I ended up just getting a microcassette recorder instead. Sure, it's analog, so it's a lot less convenient, but you can get them for like 20 bucks on sale, and the tapes are like a dollar apiece. Quality is just fine, too.

Olympus DM-1. plays MP3s and records. Olympus makes cheaper versions that only record. The DM-1 costs about 200-250 and comes with a 64 meg card. you can get a used 128 meg smart media for a couple of bucks.
