I'm thinking of switching from Alltel to AT&T Wireless, but I live in a rural area and I'm wondering if anyone here uses AT&T in a rural area and has any comments.

I don't have any big complaints about Alltel, but I want to upgrade from an old bag phone to a digital with text messaging etc. that I can carry in my pocketbook. AT&T has a nice promo going right now, Alltel doesn't.

AT&T in urban areas is very oversubscribed and difficult to connect to. Plus, if you are in NYC, their SMS system has been down for months so that feature is out. On top of that, AT&T's roaming charges are an arm and a leg.

I also have Sprint PCS which is a little bit better than ATT but I don't like their phones as much.

I use it. Made the switch from Sprint PCS, which was the worst service I ever had. I live in a rural area also. I have had no problems whatsoever.

Wyst and DannyLove, I appreciate knowing that you haven't had any problems with their services and billing etc. I should have asked about that as well in my post. Thanks.

Doggiedog, I wouldn't be using it much in large urban areas, but good to know any downside, thanks.

Rich, Norman is a metropolis compared to where I'm living right now, but I'd say you could have some of the same sorts of problems with wireless services. It helps to know you like them, thanks.

snakesnfrogs, bummer.

My friend had Sprint for a year, he lives in a more rural area than I, and he has just made the switch to AT&T ( I forgot about this ) He loves it. Course, he's not rural.. "rural" but, it's wayy down at the bottom of Texas.. So, it's pretty rural compared to Austin. :)

Hope that helps.

Wyst, it does help, thanks again.

So far AT&T sounds like a good choice, unless I move to NYC.

Croton goes to UCLA.

Everyone and their mothers have Cingular (Pac Bell) here.

Croton has AT&T.

Croton can make calls everywhere. Everyone and their mothers can't because they overload the network.

AT&T has digital and analog mode. Analog is great for rural areas because there may not be digital service available in those areas.

I have been w/AT&T since 10th grade. I LOVE IT.

I have AT&T with the Ericson phone(the one with internet connection).I love the phone, good service and I travel alot.I have the one rate plan,it's about 50.00 a month but there are many plans to choose from.I would not recommend the internet option, not really worth it.

Croton, most people in this area use Cellular One or Alltel so hopefully I would be in the same situation using AT&T that you have described. Digital is available in my area, but I've seen from the map in the brochure that it's not available nearby or in many areas, that could be a problem. Thanks.

Jac59, this promo is for the Nokia phone which I have heard good things about, I hope they're right. One of the selling points for me is the internet option, could you tell me why you wouldn't recommend it? Thanks.

I'm in suburban NY (Suffolk County) and just went back to AT&T after a very disappointing stint with VoiceStream. Billing problems, poor connections, Customer Service problems, you name it.

I liked AT&T last time around and I like them now.

Gittyup, thanks for the map. Most of the areas I travel in would be covered by it and it looks like the Regional plan would be my best bet.

This may be a dumb question, but if I get a digital phone, I'll still be able to use it anywhere wireless service is offered won't I? I understood that to be the case, but that I could only get text messaging and other services like that in the areas with digital available. Am I correct in that? I've only used analog before.

Cyberian, those are definitely issues I'm concerned about, thanks.

I switched a few months ago from crappy sprint to ATT (they had a $60 rebate and for the 8260 for $20). Anyways, i must say this is the best service I've ever had. I started with Airtouch (before they converted) and it sucked. Then went with pacbell (before verizon) and it too sucked. Then went to sprint for their national roaming. It's ok I guess, but my phone Samsung 3500 crapped out on me. It completely crapped out. PHone earpiece stopped working so I had to use the handsfree. Then that too stopped working. Got an exchange on handsfree. But crapped out again. And now here I am. I think ATT has the better phone anyways. Coverage is good. Roamed with it qutie a bit (east coast).

Frizzlefry, I've been using Alltel and I have no complaints about their services, but like you, I'm interested in the offer of what I've been told is a better phone at a good promotional price. I just don't know anyone who uses AT&T Wireless in this area, so your confirmation and the others of their good service is very helpful. Thanks.
