ionic breeze comes out dead last in tests, stay away.
do you recall any sites that have these comparisons? I'd like to see who's on top
There are at least a few discussions about air cleaners/purifiers in the archive, though accessing the archive is sometimes a major PITA.
WRT to Consumer Reports, the
Friedrich C-90A has topped their annual household air cleaner test for something like ten years in a row. On the opposite end of the list, the Ionic Breeze has far and away been dead last every year it has been tested.
Although, the most recent CR test managed to find some competition for the Ionic Breeze in the category of worst performing air cleaner; knock-offs of the Ionic Breeze made by other companies. lol!
The C-90A is a good product, but it is an ozone-producing electrostatic collection unit combined with a fiber pre-filter and activated charcoal post-filter. While I do not know the estimated annual cost of running the C-90A given the periodic replacement of the activated charcoal filter, these electrostatic collection devices
require frequent cleaning to maintain their high filtration efficiency rates. As the collector plates become saturated with gunk, their ability to attract and hold particles rapidly declines.
Although the CR test methodology is generally sound, it should come with one caveat. The results for electrostatic collection units are only applicable for optimally maintained units. IOW, this is the performance you can expect
only if the unit is cleaned religiously. How often depends on factors unique to each household, but I would say that no fewer than 2 times every month is a reasonable expectation. These things can get nasty, too, so its not a 5 minute jobby.
