Tried a linksys, two dlinks, one netgear, and maybe one more. All of them fail after a few hours. One of the older dlinks worked pretty decently, but ended up breaking.

When it overheats, the connection usually switches to limited connectivity, or most connections in the area won't show up.

WHY?!

Where do you have this adapter plugged in at? Wifi adapters tend to get hot. Plcement of them can have alot to do with it. Now i'm asuming we are talking about a USB wifi adapter. If so then start using a USB exstention cable and get the adapter away from the hot PC and in the open where it can be cooled a bit better. You can also try removing it from the plastic cover so it can stay cool.

My upstairs computer has been using the same 2wire(g) usb adapter for over two years w/o a problem. This is on a system that has not been off more that a day or two at most in that time and is used for down loading lots of video and pictures for my wife's business. It has a three foot or so cable and is mounted up under her desk with very little air movment. I wonder if there is a problem with your system that is effecting your usb voltage either high or low could possibly cause a problem.

I have had a D-Link PCI Wireless adapter for over 5 years in a small mATX case with mediocre ventilation.... never had it overheat

USB Wireless adapters tend to get hot due to lack of heat dissipation substance in their circuit (small sealed piece of plastic.

However 5 units different manufacturer? Very unusual.

If it is Desktop switch to PCI.

If it is a Laptop, switch to Card bus.

Otherwise try using a USB extension cable (as suggest above).

Yeah they're all tiny USB wireless adapters.
I'm already using the USB extension cable.
I'm currently using this one
When I bought it, I made sure I got the one with the best reviews. It doesn't look so good anymore however. People's experiences seem quite mixed with these.
:(
Well I just got one more from verizon, I'll try it out.
