I've bee cooking lots of meat and been thinking that I should get one. Should make cooking better so I won't have to judge by the color alone. Anyone have any suggestions?

Edit: Hit enter instead of shift

What kind of question is this? It's like asking for recommendations for a spatula. Go to Williams Sonoma or Sur La Table and pick one out. If you want something cheaper go to Linens N Things or Bed Bath & Beyond.

It seems there's questions about everything else in this forum (jobs, spouses, cars, life), just thought I ask it.

I'm sure that there's people who approach buying a computer the same way..."just buy one from Best Buy":Q

Edit: What if Walmart's the only store that would carry them? none of those stores with in 30 miles

For those of you that use them for steak and whatever, how long does it take to read the temps? Or do you leave it in the whole time?

Forget that. Just go by looks and if you cant tell by looking at a steak weither its done cooking or not, you shouldnt be cooking it.

sorry, i forgot to look. i know i got it from bed, bath & beyond though. it was just a regular metal thermometer. about 5-6" long. (god, i know someone is going to take this the wrong way) I just stick it in one end of the meat and leave it in while the meat cooks. i usually stop at 165 degrees for pork.

I have one of those electronic ones with the probe that goes to a remote reader. It was on clearance at Williams-Sonoma for like $15. It has "preset" temps for common things, and you can also have a couple custom thresholds. It also has a built-in timer.

It's particularly good b/c you don't have to open the oven/grill to read the temp.

The downside is that it's tough to get it in just the right spot, especially on a turkey/chicken breast.
