My Dell Inspiron 2650C laptop fan cycles on-and-off continuously. Do laptop coolers work? Which brand and model are you using?

Thanks.

That's how it's designed to work. But to ummmm answer your question if laptop coolers didn't work they'd be kinda pointless and we'd still be running 486 laptops wouldn't we?

You do know what a laptop cooler is, right? To answer your question, if laptop coolers didn't work we would be using laptops without laptop coolers....like the majority of laptop users.

Do they work? Dunno, but some anecdotal evidence is they do help a bit. It also helps to have a table with a very smooth surface to facilitate air flow. Tablecloths act as insulators. Others have said granite top tables help, but they don't seem to make a significant difference for me.

However a laptop cooler would be useless for me. It basically forces you to use the laptop as a desktop. Put it one spot and don't move it. Kinda defeats the point of a laptop.

I've used one before, seemed to keep the system cool enough to not crank on the system fan as much

I had a 486 laptop that overheated because the cooling in it sucked. so it crashed a lot...

I've used one of those laptop cooler pads that had 3 fans. 2 of the fans died within 2 months. As for if it works, it depends on the laptop you're using it with. It did make a difference with my Dell Inspiron 8200 which got VERY hot and the fans only came on every once in a while. I doubt however that it would make much or any difference with my IBM Thinkpad T40. The Thinkpad runs extremely cool and its fan is on almost all of the time (luckly it's MUCH quieter than the Inspirons fans). IMO they're just not worth it.
