Anyone use a double edge razor?

So after reading a lot about double edge razors I decided to get myself a Merkur. I just had my first shave and I have to say its not what I expected...but perhaps theres a learning curve? It feels like I fell off the bike for the first time...and skinned my face in the process.

Any tips or suggestions? I felt like I had to go over an area more than once to get it close as I would like...to be honest I had to touch up with a mach3 at the end...

I use a Merkur as well. You're supposed to use 3-4 passes with a DE to get a very close shave. Go with, across, across the other direction, and, if needed, against the grain, relathering in between. Ensure that you're not pressing down, stretching the skin when possible, and using the proper blade angle (razor handle should be at about 30° angle to your skin).

There most definitely is a learning curve. It took me a couple months to get the hang of it, though now I'd never go back to anything else. Check out this set of videos on YouTube for help.

i use a gillete DE adjustable and a GEM jr.
