Anyone use a diaper genie?

Just curious. We are expecting our first child and everyone I know buys one of these things. However, everyone I know with an older child says the thing just ended up stinking to high heaven and they threw it out.

Are these things worth it or should I pass on this one. There is so much crap that I hear you 'must have' when really you don't, so I'm trying to save some space and money. Thanks!

I dont own one (dont have a use for one yet) but everyone I know also says that they just reaked and couldnt get the smell out. Doesnt seem worth it.. When I'm ready to have a kid Im going to stick with a regular diaper pail.

I had one when the boy was a baby...besides smelling up the room, the thing was hard to use. Once you learn the secret way of folding a used diaper, just throw them in the trash and you are all set.

Yeah.... we tossed ours out pretty soon... since then everything just goes in the trash... except the really messy ones get put in a plastic bag first.

Using one for a second time now(second kid).
I have never had a problem with smell, don't think you should if you use it correctly, which wastes alot of the bag if you do it correctly.
It is a pain in the @SS, and my wife cannot figure it out even though it's been 3 years now so I am stuck doing it all the time.

I would look at everything else out there and Congrats on your first baby

I think the diaper genie works pretty good. As long as you don't try to stuff too many diapers in there. Its convenient having a diaper disposal near where you change the most diapers. I also found that if you throw some dryer sheets in the genie it helps keep it smelling mmmm so good.

It works great for newborns up to about six or eight months. I never had a problem with the smell at all.

Like someone mentioned above, when you fold the diaper right it's not a problem. When your child is old enough, the diapers are too big to put more than a few diapers in there any way. Newborn diapers are so small you can put several days worth in the genie. I was glad we had one.

 

My parents had a diaper service with cloth diapers for me - they found it was easier (AND cheaper, believe it or not) than buying pull-ups at the supermarket.

Never used one but it seems like a waste to me. Just fold the used diapers up right and there's no problem with the stench.

Agreed with jjones and the others who said folding it properly is the best way...

We decided against the Genie because of the "special" (read: EXPENSIVE!!!) bags it required. Found one that takes regular bags, has flaps to mostly hold the smell in, but still has the deodorizer disk in the lid. It seals tight on top of that, so works great. Just take the bag out every day or so and you won't even notice the diapers. (And we're still using it, since my baby is about 1 1/2 months old)

I have little twin sisters, and it worked well for us. As someone mentioned, using it properly wastes a lot of the bag.

We're using the same one with our second child. Works great IMHO. We've always folded the diapers the same way, so that's never been a problem for us. I definitely reduces the amount of stench, but doesn't elimnate it by any means.

They do sell the refills in "Toddler Size". Larger/more bag, and stronger deodorant in it. We never tried it tho. But yes, for the newbies, it definitely helps.

I've had one for a while, originally we used it for our dog. We actually clean up after dog when going on walks... and rather then stink up barrels in garage put bags in diaper genie and it helped a lot. Still, it stinks when you open container... but garage doesn't stink.


Got a second one when daughter was born, use that one upstairs. Never had a problem with smell in her room.

Couple of secrets
1) already mentioned -- roll up diaper and tape it down (before sticking in diaper genie).
2) Use twist after each diaper so it forms a diaper sausage inside.
3) That circle thing on the top lid with the points on it, is special scissors, you put it on the plastic part and spin it around to cut off the sausage when the pail is full.

The thing is NOT intuitive, you really need to read the directions on how to set it up, but, once you understand how it works it works well. It is SIMPLE to use, but you do have a small learning curve. You can buy the refills 4 for the price of 3 at ToysRUs w/ in store coupons every now and then. Otherwise, $4.4x is about the price regularly. The refills seem to last a while, a few months for us, but the pail fills up pretty quickly, usually every day or two have to cut the sausage and throw it out.

Ours didn't stink, however it bacame to much of a hassle eventually.

The stinky ones go in the kitchen garbage which is generally changed daily.

If it's particularly stinkalicious, it gets put in a plastic bag and tied up before being thrown in the trash.

I used it, but kept it outside not in the room. Yeah, it does have odor it just saves room in trash can.
