Anyone upgraded a notebook CPU?

I would like to upgrade my notebook CPU from a 550 to a 750. Any thoughts? What are the risks?

MB support
Heat
Bios

And if so, is there a website that can help me troubleshoot/resolve these issues?

thanks

i have an old compaq 1685 that had an amd k6 2 350 that i changed to an amd k2+ 475. that was when laptops use to use zif sockets and jumpers.

I think some laptops are upgradable while some are not. Id expect the higher priced laptops are upgradeable. I have a fujitsu i4187. Id love to put in a p3 but I doubt my laptop would allow it. Also wish I could get a higher res than 800x600.

Anyways, you might wanna call the manuf of your laptop and ask. It might void your warrenty though if the laptop is still under warrenty.

You probably can do it but it will be hard to get a few bucks for the old one (much harder even then to get a mobile processor 🙁 )

Don't know if it is possible. If the notebook is slim and hard to access, then chances are, there will not be a socket for you to upgrade much less a chance to get into the bios and actually changing the settings or jumpers to play with.

Might be that older ones have that kind of upgradeability. That and you will be hard pressed to find a mobile processor.

I would suggest that you find out what type of CPU it is, there are 3 types of mobile cpus (intel at least), MMC-1, MMC-2, and uPGA. I believe that uPGA is the newest form. I've installed cpus in my 2 gateways and it worked because I knew prior to installing them that they would accept the cpus.

Burnt: There are (4) types of mobile CPU's, the ones you mentioned plus the Intel mini-cartridge , as seen here. Plus there were the AMD socket 7 CPU's that ran at lower voltages than their nearly identical desktop counterparts.

HK29: In order to upgrade you CPU, you only need to know if yours is socketed or not. Heatwise, someone correct me, but the thermal specs should be very similar up to 800MHz or 850MHz. Yes, I pulled that one out of .........., but the 800/850s were released quite some time after the 650-750 had been out for awhile, so there could be different thermal specs. Plus, I don't think it is a coincidence that all of Toshiba's laptops changed models with those speed CPU's. I believe they had to redesign the laptop to accomodate the new heatsink designs.

i've done it a bunch of times. any notebook over 500mhz would be mmc-2 or upga2 only. most likely upga-2 except for certain gateway and dell machines. some are bga-2 though, which is basically upga-2 but soldered down

I got a PIII700 mobile. I don't know if I can install it but I got a good deal. If I can install it (its the socket not the slot) and that the bios actually supports this speed and voltage, I am worried about the increase in heat. I hope that I don't burn anything out ... I should get the 700 sometime next week. Wish me luck 🙂

hk29,
I have a VAIO FX 210 (AMD Mobile Duron 800). If you flip your laptop on its back, you may see two access panels. One is for the RAM add-on slot and I`m hoping the other is for upgrading the CPU.
Be advised that Sony`s website (VAIO) leaves a lot to be desired.
Good luck.

big neko, i doubt that is a CPU access panel. cpu changing usually requires total removeable of the keyboard and heat plates. that is probably an access panel to the mini pci card, for networks and modems . say you want a 3com one then you could do that, instead of like an ESS one that most machines have.

also hk29, easiest way to tell if your laptop can handle the heat, is check if there are higher clocked laptops in the same line as your laptop. they usually use the same casings and heat spreaders etc.
