Got an email (good quick response) that was nice and polite, albeit of a standard that would have caused ATOT grammar nazis to set their browsers to 'kill', telling me that they would look into it and discuss the matter :)

So far i've got nothing but good things to say about their customer service

I went through an RMA on a Palit GF4 4200 a while back. It showed 1"x1" texture color blocks over certain areas of the display when playing UT. It was within warranty so they had to take care of it, but I wish you the best on the RMA. I've since sworn off any off-brand vendors and prefer eVGA (altho thats not an option for your location) due to their exemplary warranty.

Now when are you going to join the Anti-SUV Brigade? :p

I'm looking at a excellent deal i could take advantage of on a Toyota Hilux dual cab turbodiesel ute next year, so...

;)

It would make an excellent national park/beach vehicle for fishing, as well as having room for five, and a tray, as well as an excellent tow rating :D

Sorry to hear of your trouble. I remember lending advice on what was supposed to be a simple viddy upgrade not long ago -if you remember 'twasn't I who recommended Palit, let alone a 6800, so don't blame me! :p

I think it was shortly afterwards that I learned you had been banned but did not catch what for. Anyway, welcome back.

As for the suspected bracket misalignment, I don't doubt it and see the described connector gap but is that so unusual? They are usually recessed at least. Check out these pics, for instance.

Yeah i know, but it looks (to me at least) more significant on my card, and with the double bracket slot the pressure is going to be much greater on the card than with a single bracket slot, in a single slot bracket case in may not cause enough tension to move the card?

I don't have the card anymore, and that's the only useful surviving pic i have, but it's the only way i can explain what happened. If you've got any better suggestions hit me up :)

I have an FX5200 in an identical mobo in the same case right now, and it's been running fine for the past week...

the ref and data buses are extremely low amps
And all of your statements that the PSU is "adequate" are irrelevant to a failed filter cap

From the relevant pinout for my card (from that table, it's an AGP 3.0 on a 1.5v slot) the burnt traces include the motherboard voltage supplies ;)

I don't know about AGP cards, but for PCI-E cards GamingPhreak's description is correct. If the card is not seated tight enough it'll cause black (blank) screen unless you have something more conductive between the card and the slot. Assuming it happens with AGP cards, it's still a grey area in that it could also be the case manufacturer's fault. You might want to check the exact specs for ATX and AGP form factor, and take an appropriate actioni. It still sucks what happened here. Is Palit known for either good/bad warranty?

Let me try to explain this ;)

1. The card initially started and ran fine for ~5 hours at least

2. I initally ran several 3dmarks and at least half an hour of farcry, with no issue whatsoever.

4. It then died/caused a distaster/whatever, after several hours of idling, at 2d clocks, with nothing else in the system stressing anything (no scheduled scans etc, blank screen).

3. After the card died, there was a clear burn on the relevant fingers that supply the card with voltage from the motherboard.

4. If the card had twisted horizontally in the slot, the fingers could easily have shorted on one of the agp socket connectors.

5. Which would explain the burn on those fingers, and no visible damage elsewhere on the card.

I'm not sure if that helps, but it looks pretty ;)

The only contact the card had with the case was the bracket being screwed to the case backplate, like i've done with all my past cards, and my present card (in the same mobo and case)...

hey dug, I can tell you what happened with you 6800GS...you bought a Palit...that's the problem.

My company stopped selling Palit/Daytona products a while back because of the high failure rate and really poor warranty, we used to place bets when customers came in to purchase a Palit product...we would first try to get to spend a little more on a gigabyte or Asus card, failing that we would sell them the product and then snicker behind their back and place bets on how long it would be before they returned it.

IIRC Payit had a 1 in 3 failure rate and hence we stopped selling them.
I always refered to them as the Pcchips of video cards....very bad Quality.
