Anyone try putting one of those Amd Mobile chips on an K7S5A? UPDATE: It works!

Guess I'll find out. I took the plunge and bought a 2400+. Don't really have any expectations of getting any OC. But thought I test it out before getting another motherboard. Currently, I'm going to run it with 512mb DDR2700 333 RAM. I'm not really sure about the multiplier x fsb setup I should have. Since it's an unlocked chip I should be able to get a pretty high multiplier, no?

even though the cpu is multiplier unlocked, you still need a board with multiplier adjusment.

im not sure, but it doesnt seem like the k7s5a has multiplier adjustment.

I really doubt that the K7S5A will detect it properly either unless you see a BIOS update adding "support" for it. On my ABIT board it detects it as an "unknown CPU type" and defaults it to 6 x 100. Since I can manually change the multiplier this is not an issue but you can't do that on the ECS board.

That's too bad. I could've sworn that I read somewhere (maybe on the ocw forum) that someone got theirs up and running.

So far I have it running at 2025 Mhz, System clock @ 150, and Multiplier @ 13.5 The only thing I've done so far was update the BIOS to the Honey X version. The cpu was even recognized correctly. Didn't have to do any mods and it's up and running stable at 38C all at 1.45v! I guess the next step is to get better memory or do some on board mods to up the multiplier.
Guess I can hold off on buying a new mobo for a little while longer.

Did the original ECS BIOS recognize the CPU alright? Plus, what kind of "mobile" CPU do you have? Desktop Replacement? Standard Mobile? Low Power?

I'm doubt that the original bios would've recognized it. I flashed it before installing the CPU.
I got the Amd Mobile Athlon 2400+ over at Newegg. The flashed bios recognizes it as "mobile Athlon 2400+" Not really sure about what *kind* of mobile it is...

Next thing on my list is to research how to get more voltage into this chip to run at higher clock, I vaguely recall reading something about wire-mod trick that shouldn't be hard to do.

mr plashphire--

Hey, glad to read your informative topic here ! I'm thinking of getting the same mobile 2400+ you got and putting in my K7S5A v1.0.

Is yours a v 1.0 ? Also, now that a few months have passed how well does your rig run ?

FYI I have a mobile Barton 2500+ 45W desktop replacement in a k7S5A Pro board. I modded in a manual voltage control since the mobile chips have a different voltage pin configuration. it runs fine without the mod you're just automatically overvolting the chip to about 1.575vcore check it out on Fab51 I have mine set to run at 1.52vcore and use a program called CPUMSR to lower the multiplier and CPUCooL to crank up the FSB. I'm running just over 2.1ghz 170FSBx12.5 with a gig of old school kingmax sdram. I was using Honey X's bios but it would not POST at 150mhz. I downgraded to an older Cheapo bios that posts fat and happy at 150mhz. I needed to do this to reach the higher FSB since speed fan would crash my computer and using the fine tuning in CPUCooL will not change the PCI divisor which is necessary to reach the higher FSB. Also the manual multiplier mod won't work with a mobile cpu on this board since it is smart enough to read and use the mobile multipliers(this caused me hours of agrivation until I figured out what was happening). Also I would advise having a fan blow on your voltage regulators. mine get a little too toasty for comfort.

I have a K7S5A, with the latest Honey X Bios.

I want to upgrade my Athlon XP 1600+ retail to a Mobile 2600+ or an OEM Thorton 2400+.

Questions:

1. These both run at 2GHz Stock, would I see much of a boost with the Mobile's extra 256K Cache?

2. Is the boost worth the extra $32 (47% price increase).

3. Does the K7S5A automatically recognize and set the max multiplier of 15 for the Mobile 2600, or is a mod required?

4. From everything I have read the Mobile should easily hit 15 x 150, are the chances good with the 2400+?

I hope to overclock the FSB to 147 or 150 to get ~ 2.2 GHz. I can only get 147 now, but I don't know if it is the CPU or my DDR Ram (2 x 256 MB Corsair).

I plan on using a Speeze "FalconRock" HSF, it looks like the best available for about $10.00 on Newegg.

Thanks,

I just installed a Mobile 2600+ onto my K7S5A.

It first booted as an Athlon 1800+ with the default FSB of 100 MHz.

Bios erroneously said it was a Mobile 2400+, but it booted at the proper 2 GHz, once I adjusted the fsb to 133 MHz in the bios.

It automatically sets the multiplier at 15.

I currently have it running at 15 x 147 = 2.2 GHz, with no apparent problems. I will have to run Prime, etc. to make sure everything is 100% stable, but it looks good so far.

This board never liked anything higher than 147. When using CPU Cool to adjust the FSB it will immediatly hang at 150 MHz, and gets the BSOD promptly after setting 166 MHz with either the 1600+ or Mobile 2600+.

The Speeze all copper heatsink with an 80mm fan I used (Model # 5F394B1L3G) is a big step up from the retail HSF that came with my old 1600+. I don't think my new CPU's temp has hit 50 Degrees C yet.
