Anyone try Permatex anti-seize (poor mans Artic Silver)?

A friend just told me he has great sucess using Permatex Anti-Sieze compound as his thermal grease. It is aluminized, and he say it compares favorably with Artic Silver, at about a 1/4 of the price.

So, anyone else tried this? I'll give it a shot for kicks.

Did he happen to compare the two on a socket-thermistor platform?

Since socket-thermsitor temps are often compressed largely, the difference between Arctic silver on a t-bird 1ghz can sometimes be nothing, or 1 or 2C. Now, if you were able to measure core temp, i'd suspect a 3-4-5-6C core temp drop with AS.

Thanks! This could be a fun experiment! I'm no chemist, but:

Mineral oil: I'd say not too good for a CPU.
Graphite: Who knows? Maybe it keep theCPU from "locking up" ha-ha
ALUMINUM: See! Aluminum is Silver in Color!
PETROLEUM DISTILLATE: Hmm. Would be neat to see flames shoot out from CPU.
ALUMINUM OXIDE: See! Even more silver colored metal.
COPPER: Aha! A BONUS metal.
Hydrotreated heavy naphtha: For a cheap buzz when applying coumpound.
Lithium soap: Lithium soap. Wow. Greasy soap.


I say this petrochem cocktail maybe just what the doctor ordered!

Nevin has already posted on this topic. I believe that one of the properties of anti-seize is that it should not conduct heat well.

Not only that, but both aluminum and copper conduct electricity great! That should be good for those Socket A CPU's!! Lithium grease, and petroleum products will also lose viscosity at high temps (thin out), so flowing copper and aluminum is possible, too. What's not to like about this idea?

Why would someone even think to try Anti-seize? because of the color? I've got a quart of anti-seize, I should package it in little tubes and fleabay the stuff. ;)

I don't understand the mentality of anybody wanting to experiment with this 'stuff'. High powered BIRDS will burn up before you get a chance to shut down the system. Arctic Silver is expensive because its actually DESIGNED for the purpose and it works. Considering you use a small amount, AS is a bargain. Its simply stupid to risk burning up your cpu for a couple of bucks.

I am a chemist and that stuff sounds scary to be slathering on a CPU core that can reach the temps that it reaches... If the "petroleum distillates" (you can look at the MSDS sheets for petroleum distillates yourself) don't flame up, the oozing of the stuff (light mineral oil has a viscosity that's really not too different from water at very high temps) onto the substrate, and migration of any bits of the various metals (including the graphite) anywhere near the bridges would surely.... ack! :Q
