Anyone tried unlocking Stream Processors on an 8800 GTS?

So yeah? I'm surprised I couldn't much information on this with google searches and multiple forums.

At first I thought the 8800 GTS wouldn't have the SP units even on the chip, but when I opened up RivaTuner, it was there and says disabled. Now the question is...IS IT REALLY THERE OR ARE THEY BULLSHITTING US?

Now has anyone tried?

I see it...and i want to click it...but i'm scared .

The disabled quad is physically there, but as far as I know it has been laser cut.

Nvidia and ATI had been very deliberate in not allowing features to be unlocked since the 6800 and X800 days.

Has anyone tried to do it through riva tuner? I'm afraid if I did it and I get a black screen I wouldnt' be able to turn it off.

On the brightside, so far overclocked from 500/800 to 660/1000 and no artifacting yet!

I thought I read they were laser cut as well. Unfortunately, I don't have any links to prove it.

Tried it in rivatuner when i first got my card. The stream processors do not unlock, so trying to enable em does nothing. And enabling the ROPs or the TMUs, i can't exactly remember the setting, didn't enable but caused the comp to crash whenever going into 3d mode.

So nope u can't unlock em, would be good though... wouldn't matter for my card, the 320 mg is whats holding it back.

See how there are 16 stream processors inside 8 blocks? 16x8 = 128 stream processors

Remove 2 blocks, you have 6, 6x16 = 96 stream processors ala GeForce 8800 GTS.

Actually, you can't unlock what "is" there. All 128 stream processors are present in the G80, but only 96 are functional on the GTS version. The 2 blocks are disabled permanently rendering 32 shaders useless. Could be failed cores were used for GTS cards. But, they are there. I tried to unlock them with RivaTuner 2.01. No luck.

That's too bad. The successes that people had with the 6800 and X800 were astonishing. I guess with a mainstream card like the GTS, nVidia knew better than to not laser cut the cores. If they release a GTO however ;)

Ah, oh well! Thanks, thats the kind of answer I was looking for.

What kind of overclocks are you guys getting?

I managed to get my GTS up to 660/1100 MHz running stably for an hour of stress testing with load temps around 76-79 C.

Shocked at the 300 MHz overclock on the ram are they always this overclockable?

you couldnt do it anyway could you, arent those shader blocks linked into some ROPs and then those ROPs linked with their own 64bit memory controller to some ram?

you need all the pieces there for it to work?

run that HDRITBL or what ever its called..... i cant remeber exactly but it features wierd 360 degree photograhic backgrounds and then stacks of orbs floating around and you chose lots of different HDR techniques and effects.... it runs in a window and you can enable AA from within it as well

i used to use that alot, i found it better than the fluffy cube in Ati tool.

it gets your card nice n toasty pretty quickly and you can quickly see artifacts...such as the checker board effect or sparkling pixels or whatever.

edit: Found it

its called RTHDRIBL, real time high dynamic range image based lighting

LoL, actually I was using that program there too. I don't know if they've updated it...I downloaded my copy back when I got my 9700 Pro in March of '03 haha.

From my short time testing with it though, It didnt' get it as hot ATI-Tool though.

I also tried with Rivatuner to unlock the quad but it didn't work. And ATITool makes the card load at a higher temperature than RTHDRIBL does.
