pdaNet is an app for the Blackberry, Treo, Android, etc... It uses the USB tether to share your phone internet connection with your PC/Laptop. I just moved and am trying to keep my costs low because a lot of my stuff was stolen during the move when I didn't have insurance. :(

Anyhow...I got a Droid last month and have my 3G connection on my computer. I'm getting 250kbit down and 350kbit up. (35kb/sec down) It's not too bad for web browsing and moderate iTunes downloading. I'm considering paying $29 for the full version and taking a year or two off from online gaming. (the 3 or 4 titles I didn't throw away were stolen anyway) My job pays for all but $20 of my cellphone bill, so it'll help me justify keeping a data plan if I can double-dip....plus there's always my neighbors' wifi signals...I just don't want to steal bandwidth from them unless I get stuck in a tight spot. :p

You might want to make sure whatever carrier you are tethering too you have a data plan that allows it. Most carriers will not care if it small amount of data usage, though if you start to pull a lot they can ding you. Usually the bils are crazy expensive, since they charge by the amount of data you pull down.

I'm with Verizon and pay for an unlimited data plan. I checked and have pulled down 320MB in the past week between my Droid and having it hooked up on here. If they try to bill me extra after selling me an unlimited plan, I'll ding them back. :p

I know I'm slow with this technology. I never could justify having a cellphone bill over $30 and just recently switched employers....so am now getting a larger stipend for cellphone usage...which covers all but $20 of my cell/data plan. ;) It's nice having google in my pocket all the time.

Make sure you read the Terms of Service from Verizon on your data plan. Unlimited is not truly unlimited.

I use it, haven't been tagged yet. On the Alltel plan with 500 minutes and unlimited text data on a HTC Touch Pro. Me and bro used several hundred GB's in one month and haven't gotten hit with tethering yet.

A few of the guys I work with told me about the 5 gig limit... One of them logged into his verizon account and said it now says, "unlimited". I don't know what their old policies were because I'm new to the data plans, but I looked at everything on my plan and it appears to have no set limits.

The caveat is that they state in the fine print what you can't use your connection for. It's specifically supposed to be for web browsing and email. Streaming media, continuous uploads of pictures, spam, reply-bots, etc...are all prohibited. I'm pretty sure as long as I don't engage in anything out of the ordinary, I'll be way down their hit list of people to bill extra. If they try it...I'll pay em a visit and get it straightened out in one of their stores.

Yup, I'm on a unlimited Data plan with my Blackberry & US Cellular and they dinged me once for going over. :(
All in the TOS.
