I'm thinking of replacing the slow aging domain controller that I have with a better one, how would you move everything over ? Would you just make another master and move the 4 services over, ie operations master, FMSO master, etc to the new machine, shut the old one down and pray ?

I take it this is a Windows 2000 DC? If so, then you need to install your new server (install Windows 2000 server version, then install AD), make sure that your DNS server is not the server you want to replace (if so, then install DNS on the new server, and then change your DNS settings on all of you clients; DHCP if you have it installed), transfer over the FSMO roles either with Active Directory Users and Computers and Active Directory Sites and Services or with NTDSUTIL.

If you have any more specific questions, please let me know.

Yeah, right now I have W2K DC with DNS as same machine, do you think it's wise to split it or doesn't matter ?

I would leave DNS on the old server, and have both co-exist on the network. The more DC's you have in the network, the better the performance.

If you need help doing this, just IM me.

kinda off topic, but I was wondering, Shadow, did you get the MCSE first or the CCNA? Which was harder? I am almost done with MCSE, I have done A+ and plan on doing MCSD. Would it be worthwhile to do CCNA too just so I am not stuck with just Microsoft OSes and would then have some versatility?

Thanks.
