Anyone tried mead?

Take the light burn of a smooth whiskey and mix in a couple really big scoops of honey.

That's mead.
 
I have a friend who makes her own mead, I have tried a few of them I didn't like the pepermint one much, but the peach and pear ones were awesome.
 
Mead is AWESOME.

This is supposedly pretty average among meads, but it's one of the few I've been able to find at local stores Chaucers Mead

It's a bit thicker and "fuller" then beers. The flavor is quite strong. It can be a bit on the sweet side.

My favorite drinks are quality Belgian abts and quadruple ales, however, Meads are pretty high on the last as well.

EDIT: The place I usually get my beer from, Binny's, sometimes carries THIS. I'm gonna try to get a bottle or two of it this weekend.

 
I tried some of the tourist ripoff mead in Ireland. I thought it tasted like cheap white wine with sugar in it. Then I looked it up and found out it wasn't even real mead, just wine with honey & other flavors added. Blech.

the couple meads that i've tried have been rather thin-bodied and sweet. that makes sense, though, because mead is fermented honey/water.

The one I tried was also that way. My fraternity brother's brother made it from a kit, I think.
 
I've made it. It's actually pretty tough to do well as there is nothing to hide mistakes. With beer you've got all sorts of specialty grains and hops and the flavor of most is strong enough to cover bad flavors in another ingredient. Good mead is nothing but water, honey and yeast. ANY mistakes in the cooking process, any mistakes in the fermenting process, poor water quality, the wrong yeast variety, bad honey, etc etc etc will all ruin a batch of mead. Done right by a competent brewer mead is delicious. It's light and fairly dry, NOT heavy and sweet.
 
I used to brew mead on occasion. It generally turned out much dryer than I liked, and also way too strong. They tended to be hot, and the taste of alcohol overwhelming. A few bottles and it would be a guaranteed hangover. I like the sweeter sack meads over the dryer ones, my favorites being both sweet and bubbly like sparkling wines.
 
Ive had Chaucers Mead and a few others. Its more of a Christmas drink for my family not an occasional thing. Mead is honey wine. Add some nutmeg and other sweet spices to it and it can get even better. Also Mead is usually heavily sought after during the Thanksgiving weekend
