Anyone tried AT&T fiber yet?

Got it available here in San Carlos, CA. I think Comcast offers something like 2 gigabit service to my place but I'm not bothering. (It's a large install fee and $200+/month) Actually, I think it might be capped at 250mbit here. Last place offered 2 gig as an option. I don't see the point of 2 gig. No one can even use that, realistically.

So, AT&T is coming out tomorrow at 11AM and installing gigabit service into this old ass 1930's house. God have mercy on that tech. Felt bad for the comcast guy who had to run new lines underneath the house. :joycat:

Anyone have it? Thoughts? It uses the phone outlets for connection still, correct?

I think whoever does it here will be having to rerun the lines underneath the house. Poor guy. These jacks are very inconveniently placed. (Nowhere near a power outlet!)

AT&T sold their business in Connecticut to Frontier a few years ago, basically guaranteeing that it will be another 10 years that we'll get Internet speeds that fast. :(

I have FTTH here, 50/30. Pretty awesome to be able to upload at a half decent speed. Way better than DSL.

I doubt we'll ever see gig here though but unless the ISP allows to run servers and provides static IP blocks I personally would not have a use for that speed. Would still be awesome to get though. :p Even with my current package I've been debating on downgrading to the lowest tier one which is still decent, just to save money.

The biggest thing with fibre is stability though. Whatever speed they advertise, you always get (assuming they have decent backhaul links). No need to worry about how far you are from the CO or how good your cable pair is etc.

1000/1000 is the plan here. I'll be using it for 24/7 streaming of a security system to the cloud. :) Good stuff!

I wish I could get fiber, or at least a second choice in ISPs. A nice town near me supposedly built out community fiber, but I haven't heard much about it and now all the real estate listings state "Charter is coming soon!". Not a good sign.

Comcast has a monopoly in my town but they're offering gigabit (I don't think it's fiber) for like $104/month. They just jacked up my 200/15 to $90/month from $84. I bet the gigabit has something like 25Mbps up. None of these speed tiers and prices make any sense. Fuck Ajit Pai and his cronies up their asses with a baseball bat.

Yep. I'm paying $80/month for 200mbit/10mbit through comcast w/ TV and HBO (I only use HBO portion, don't use TV). Speedtest shows 235mbit/12mbit. I have a 12 month contract deal. I'll be cancelling it and getting dat fiber doe! Should be great. :) Anything that is close to 500/500 would make me happy.

I've been using AT&T Fiber since February, I think. I have the GigE plan, but they also offer 100 Mbps and 35 Mbps but they have data caps on those two plans. I prefer the uncapped GigE and have no real complaints. I do use it with a VPN service, but the raw bandwidth is something like 950/985 Mpbs (down/up). On good days with the VPN provider the down can be anywhere from 250-600 Mbps.

They are installing AT&T Fiber in my neighborhood this month. But when I see the price of $80/month I immediately say no thanks. What I get with Comcast is perfectly fine for half the price at $40. It's a matter of waiting 4 seconds instead of 10 then I honestly don't care.

Comcast gigabit is DOCSIS 3.x and is highly asymmetrical. The upload is 35Mbps or so.
And like DOCSIS service, there are jitter and other quality issues that aren't present with fiber to the premises. I'd gladly pay twice for FTTH over cable even if the former had 1/5 the download speed because the upload speed would still be faster! :p

Comcast does offer a FTTP connection which is provisioned just over 2Gbps. Installation cost, contracts, and necessary business to enterprise class networking gear make it not practical for users that are concerned with cost. And you have to be very close to their fiber huts or it isn't happening.
