So the Nexus 6p finally took one drop too many and cracked the glass across the device, horizontally.

Yeah, I'm not really in the mood to purchase a new phone since I've spent a bunch already on home improvement, spending $900 for a flagship is not something I want to do.

So I'm looking at last gen phones in Android (want to stay in that group) and I noticed Google's sale page includes trade-ins. For a cracked glass but operable Nexus 6,Google says the trade-in value is anywhere between $115-$155.

I would try to replace the glass myself but watching a few of the youtube videos, I'd don't think I have the patience or the will to basically take it completely apart just to replace the glass.

So I am asking the crowd what their experience has been with trade-ins.

You could always try getting the glass done at a mall etc, I have never traded in a phone.

Thanks. That's the cheapest. $249 + tax for new glass by ubreakifix, who is at the mall too.

I've always sold mine on eBay (except for my kids' iPhones, which they always offer a free upgrade with trade-in on Verizon).

I have the 6P as well, and it's going for $200+

Yeah, good point. If I would have sold it, I would have made sure to reset it to factory and wiped the storage. But if I do go over to the store and have them fix it, I need to do that too. Thanks for the reminder.

If you do, please securely wipe it :)

Trouble is, everything now is glued together. They expect you to dispose of the phone instead of fixing it. Throw away culture is such a first world thing now.

I watched three different videos on how to replace the glass. You actually have to go from the back to the front with a heat gun and gentle prying through all the components to get to it. I saw two of the videos actually bending the battery. Yeah, like I want to do that and then hand it back to my wife so she can put that up to her face.

<sigh>

I'll probably go with the Pixel XL I or II. Yeah, about a grand...geez.

Yeah - my 2nd to last phone was an S3 with an easily replaceable front bezel - I swapped the screen on it about three times over it's life. But my last phone was an S5 that lost that functionality, so when I was up for a contract renewal I sold that phone on ebay for something like $75 (even with the cracked screen) and didn't look back.

As others said, make sure you very securely wipe it. The best way to do this is to do a factory reset, then encrypt the whole phone, then do another factory reset. Should kill just about everything.
