...not literally, but what do all of you do with outdated computer parts? I just put my P90 on a key chain...looks pretty cool.

I sell them. There's a big market out there for older, slower, reasonably priced systems. ;)

how long have we been working on rc5-64? i think since fall of 1997. i remember doing the rc5-56 crack. it will take at least another two years + to exhaust the rc5-64 key space. what then? i think we move to 72bit encryption. if i remember right after 72 is 80 then 96 then 112 or something (i forget how many steps to 128) and finally 128bit. better hope we have quantum computers or DNA computing in the next 5 to 10 years. imagine how long that will take with normal silicon computing! predictions on cracking 128bits is like 10,000 years. "worthless cause"--very true. but i still do it.

nah.. for me, after RC-5 64 is done, I'm going on to Seti.

what most of us do is keep the parts for later use I think. such as put together older computers for word processing, or surfing the net through your main computer without really wasting it's CPU cycles (again, for Seti/RC5). that's what I'd do now if I had the parts.

RC5 is NOT a worthless cause. if you think so, then I'm sorry, but you are part of the problem, not the solution. RC5 is an easy thing that you don't have to worry about at all. if even HALF the people on this BBS actually ran it, we'd be winning. unfortunately, most people on this BBS are truly ignorant, like yourself, and therefor, our team will most likely end up 2nd, not 1st (which is really all most of us RC-5ers care about).

Sigh.....Another one.....In Your Opinion....:( Most everybody that is doing it is having fun....:) Just because I don't benchmark my system and try to get .0001 FPS more out of doesn't mean that I have to take the fun away from the people who DO have fun from it! Even if I did think something was useless, I would not rain on their parade with "USELESS" posts...

Have a great day all!

Finality,

I'm sure that whatever you find to be fun is also a worthless cause.

Finality: Screw you.

As for the original purpose of this thread...old floppies, HDs, etc are often usable even in "fast" systems. They may not work for Q3 but for a basic internet terminal, RC5 cracker, or internet firewall/sharing server. Old power supplies are good for powering fans. As for old procs and mobos, they make good RC5 crackers, net browsers, and keychains.

Oh yeah I am curious other than a team effort what does rc5 provide you guys with that make it so worth while? Are you trying to do anything for the human race? No. If you ran SETI you could easily argue that it is not a worthless cause. What is so great about inputting a virtually infinite number of keys? The Israelis already have tech that can crack 128 bit enccryption in a few seconds I fear to think what the US government has at there disposal.

I rather make money with my computer which I'm currently doing now. RC5 and SETI is great and all but why??? What do you guys get out of it??? Games are cool because it's fun but RC5 isn't fun. I would join your team if you can convince me. I did SETI for a little while but it's waste of my time.

"Most of the peopler here use it for RC5. A truely worthless cause."

only because people use their OLD systems for cracking.

I give my old discard computers to relative/friends. Also sometimes turn old p90s into file servers. Great for backups.
