just wonder if you think intel will do something to these chips or just leave them and migrate to their new socket completely

I'll wait to see how prescott will do with the new intel chipsets... maybe prescott was designed for the new intel socket but was made available now for the current socket just to keep up with amd...

yeah that's what i'm guessing
but i hate to upgrade my motherboard so soon
the i875 is pretty cool and i don't wanna try to afford all this new stuff right now haha

but chances are they won't do anything to decrease it's voltage or increase it's overclockability
maybe we wont see any changes for socket 478 anymore

ohh well

You can all but count on newer stepping with the current state of their heat and power leakage...i think the socket 755 should be out or arriving so I imagine that may help some things a bit.......

Something has to be done......For ppl who don't live in cool climates and have AC rooms may have some real difficulties....

My ambient room temps will rise from 73f to 81f in the summer so that is going to constitute around a 4-5c swing right there in the air used to cool the cpu....That could mean a big deal in a prescott's operation....

They have to.... they have no choice if they want to crank up the clock speed, or they'll be forced to migrate to even more exotic cooling solutions: (read, expensive). Intel is not only in the business of producing chips, they are in the business of producing them cheaply. Since they provide most of the market, and they continue to adventure in unprofitable startups and technologies, they need their x86 line to not only be cheap, but be easy to manufacture. This is the primary reason Intel hasn't gone with SOI technologies yet, and didn't go copper until .13 micron. These things are nice to have but not a necessity.

I do think it's pretty clever that Intel released these in the winter. If they had released these processors in July, I can only imagine the horror stories we'd start hearing. If it's hot in the winter, it'll be blistering in the summer - this is unacceptable. We thought Athlons at 50W/60W were excessive, this is just ridiculous.

I think the reason Intel released these chips now is that they weren't going to be able to produce the stepping they needed in time (hence the multiple delays). Release what they have now, and hopefully be able to crank out something better (fix the process!!)

I tend to agree. The temperature is a major problem here they did not know to solve. I think otherwise this chip is great but the heating/power consumption problem is so serious that they might be losing a lot of ground to AMD. In particular this summer. :D
