I am thinking of applying for a job, the appointment would be Provisional, necessitating you take and pass the next available Civil Service Exam.

I would be kinda reluctant about leaving a secure job to take one on a Provisional basis where I had to pass an exam I know nothing about......what happenes if I were to fail that exam?

Anyone take one?
What are they like?
This is an Computer Programmer type position.

Hmmm. What kind of civil service test are you speaking of? I have taken many municipal CS exams and found them to be easy, except for the psych oriented questions they throw in.

I passed all the tests but only landed one job after the incessant interviews. I stayed for 5 years and bailed out. If you enjoy a structured environment CS is for you. I am more of a free spirit and couldn't take it.

are the test specific to the type of position.....in this case Computer Programming?

Or are they more general aptitude type things?

I am well used to structured environments ;)

do you know the name of the test? I took.. some general take this to get government job one.. years and years ago.. I thought it was called PACE but all I can find called that now is a paralegal exam.. so either I don't remember what it was called or they changed the name (both equally possible) in the meantime. it was a general aptitude kind of thing (they decided, based on the test, that I was best suited to be an alcohol, tobacco and firearms inspector... which has amused me ever since).

federal job? google implies there are state civil service exams too. I wound up working for the state (virginia) back then, there were individual job-specific tests you had to take for those.

I just taken one in the last couple of weeks, for a caseworker. Most of the questions dealt with the subject, but there were other question too. Mainly grammer. In PA they will give you a breakdown of how many questions for each part of the exam.
