Im trying to get into this program and they want a GMAT score of atleast 540 or a GRE scores in the 50th percentile in
each of the verbal, quantitative, and analytic areas.

Now, put that into perspective if you can of the SATs. What would a 540 be in SAT terms? While it may not be fair to
compare the two grading systems, I just need an understanding of how hard it would be to achieve such scores.

I didn't do that well on my SATs. MY GPA is like a 3.5, but I'm afraid I may bomb on the GRE or GMAT, whichever one
I take.

I'm planning on taking the GRE in a few months. One of my friends (an engineering student) took it last summer and said it was ridiculously easy.

I just took a 'mini-test' of the GMAT and it was ok. Kinda hard in a way, but it's probably becuase it's been awhile since I took
the SAT and I hated that thing!

Interestingly, this school wants either GRE or GMAT scores, but says GMAT is more preferred! For the techno side, Ive heard that GRE are accepted, but not GMATs.

I took the GRE last summer. I have no input in terms of the GMAT.

As you probably already know, the 50th percentile of SAT scores is ~ 500 since they've done the score re-centering.

I found the GRE to be quite easy, especially the math & analytical ability sections. I think I should note, though, that math & logic are my strong points (I got my MA in Economics). Still, though, the verbal section wasn't particularly difficult either. For comparison's sake, I scored a 650 Verbal SAT, and I was in the 75th percentile on the GRE Verbal section (which I think was a score of 580).

Yes, this is why you need to get at least 770 each in the analytical and quantitative sections to get into a good engineering grad program. Verbal you can score a little lower.

I know people who got greater than 2350 who were rejected from many grad programs. And this was just for MS, not even PhD.

My understanding was that the GMAT was preferred for more business-related graduate degrees (MBA, Accounting, etc.), and the GRE for non-business. Could just be an over-simplification though.

If you want to see how you will do, buy the sample program from the GRE people (ets I think). It gives you practice at using the computer test. It has several full-length tests that will give you an accurate prediction of how you will do. One thing to be careful with the GRE computer test is to try to get the first few questions right. The test is adaptive so if you even miss one early on the quesitons start getting easier and your score will be lower.

I had to take the GRE. Very easy IMO. Don't sweat it too much. The hardest part about the whole thing for me was that the test I was given looked like it had been formatted on a typewriter back in the 1930s and was ridiculously difficult to read. It probably added 30-40% more time just so I could read the stupid thing.
