the GF wants to go to Canada for her birthday. Neither of us have never been there, and thought we'd see it for ourselves. What are some good cities to visit.

  • We'd probably stay about a week.

    Would drive from NY

    Probably mostly sightseeing and citylife

It's a fairly large country. May be good to get an idea of how long you are going for and where you are coming from.

What are you interested in doing? Winter sports? Outdoor sports like hiking and biking? Water sports? Sight seeing? City life?

haha...we dont' use 240v unless it's a stove or dryer...just like in the US. :D

The closest major city would probably be Toronto. Only been there on business so I have no idea what to do there for vacation. :)

Seems like a pretty fun place to hang out though...

Coming from New York?

Obviously Niagara Falls... a visit to "Niagara on the lake" is a nice spot for Bed & Breakfast places... Toronto is the closest large city coming from that way. You could head down Southern Ontario and go to Windsor/Detroit area... lots of stuff to do/see in that area...

Depends what you are into... :)

lol. what gets me is how essex county has a tourism department. Platypus has fond memories of the long stretch of nothingness to Toronto. :p

Depending on how long you're want to go for, I'd say Ottawa, Montreal and maybe Quebec City.

The valley or the Island are Prime! The prairies are kinda boring (I live there) and eastern Canada is stunning!

I would also strongly reccommend Ottawa and Montreal!

I was just there last week in Toronto and I must say there are a lot of places that make it a fun and interesting drive.
Definately hit up niagra, i didnt manage to get there but it was so close i could taste it, i ha to turn around and come back cause i didnt want to miss my flight. I dunno if I'll ever make it back so thats probobly the biggest thing i missed.
Walking tour of downtown toronto was great. Its a bit cold but the buidlings, architecture, and the CN tower - $#@ amazing. Do the CN at night, do the rest by day, it makes a heckuva difference. And just so you know there is an "underground" mall underneath downtown so you dont have to walk outside during the evening but frankly i walked around at 10 at night and felt safe enough but rather cold.
After toronto i liked driving up to the city of oshwa. There are some really neat rolling hills right outside the city of oshwa with some great horse farms (one a triple crown winner was born at) and it was just too cool to see the horses playing in the snow. Also lake ontario from oshwa was neat to see as there park from there really has a neat openness to it along with a small little lighthouse that makes it a neat site to behold.
Beyond that i didnt see much but just as a final note driving in canada took some getting used to. People were politer than im used to (driving in AZ and CA) moving over and leaving the left hand lane open. ALWAYS stop at right hand turns, no rolling stops. And stay outta the right hand lane unless you plan on pulling over or stopping quickly. I found myself too many times slamming on my brakes because for some reaon they will pull over and park at completely random times. or in the right hand lane if the snow bank is in the usual parallel parking spaces.

Depends where you want to go and what you want to do.

Montreal is great for a night life and comedy shows. Since it's the home of the international comedy fest, there are literally a few dozen clubs. It has a large number of touristy attractions. And it's mainly english with just a TOUCH of french culture.

Toronto isn't bad. Typical major north american city. If you're coming soon, you'll be seeing it during the spring thaw. Not the nicest, but not too bad.

If you like excellent food and better wine, arrange a tour of the Niagara on the Lake region. It's wines and food and really peaceful countryside. My roommate went with his parents and said it was one of the most relaxing times he's had.
