All top 5 front-loaders had nothing but red marks (good). Only the first two top-loaders were red-mark-free.

My advice: Buy German. Buy Bosch. It's like buying the BMW of washing machines. That or something from Miele.

For best performance at a high price:
28 Kenmore (Sears), $1100
29 LG, $1030
30 Whirlpool, $1000

Capacious and quiet, these front-loaders were frugal with energy and water. Although we have no reliability data on LG washers, this model uses a front-loading design that has been around for years.


Good performance at modest prices:
6, 13 Whirlpool, $380-$500
12 Kenmore (Sears), $500

These three conventional top-loaders got laundry clean and did well in all other tests. The Whirlpool Gold GSQ9669L[W] (6) is discontinued, but the similar model listed should offer comparable performance.

A value if noise isn't an issue:
11 GE, $300

This top-loader did a good job but is rather noisy. If your laundry room is in the basement or garage, it's worth considering.
