A guy I was talking to said he was going to major in IST and how it's the best thing in the world. Not too hard, interesting jobs, and very high pay. He said he was talking to an electrical engineer who said his job sucked but it payed great. He told the man that in IST you can love the job and get high pay. :disgust: Googling didn't turn up much about what this is. Comments?
 
If it is what I think it is. It's supposed to be a hybrid between a business related field and computer related field. The theory of course being that you end up with graduates who can tackle managing IT fields with some business savvy.

It is my experience that it produces people who are wholly unqualified for either technical positions or management positions of any kind.
 
IST, at least Penn State, is kind of an MIS/CIS/IT/CS/Business hybrid that was developed by industry instead of academics. Reason pay is so high is that a ton of ENORMOUS companies have a huge interest because you're been taught to their specifications. Very focused on teamwork in the business - not much in the way of superfluous math, science, etc. Most of your time is spent working with other socially inept people to accomplish tasks, supposedly to make yourself more accustomed to working with less socially inept people to accomplish tasks. If you want to go into IT - this is the way to go. If you want to go into CS, that's the way to go. If you're a clueless fscktard, go die.
 
I'm an IST major at Penn State, graduate later this year. I think EyeM explained it pretty well, it's not your ordinary Computer Science major, towards the end it really gets focused on integration and enterpise collaboration. However, they don't do a good job about teaching you how to configure a domain controllor and such, the material is broad at times. I think it really depends on the professor, eventhough the cirriculum is usually passed down from University Park to its satellite campuses.

Stick with older grass roots type degrees. Hiring managers are more familiar with them. (EE, CE, ME, CIS etc)

York is NEW YORK compared to where I go.. Abington. Do you guys have dorms at least? All we have is parking problems from everyone commuting, grrrrrrrr! I mean it too, parking lots get filled by 9:00.

I did a university program that is similar to IST. It really is broad and you can't say you are really a business student since you only learn the fundamentals, and also not a comp sci student since you don't learn much about interesting algorithms or even how to do a bit shift operation.

However, I really enjoyed it since I had the interest to learn on my own. I work along side computer scientists and engineers and can analyze, design, and implement solutions as well them but it didn't come easy. Worked many jobs as code monkey, reading lots of books on design patterns and enterprise development, as well as getting some certifications along the way to give me some more cred.

Depends on which way you want to go, but from my standpoint, most coders don't want to stay coders and want to move on to higher level design/management. The key is that you need to work from the bottom up if you really want to be successful. I've seen too many project managers and leads who have business background but not enough technical skills to really be a good leader.

No. We don't have dorms. There's a private developer building some about 2 blocks away, though. We also have a village of little ghetto crackerbox houses each filled with about 14 people under the age of 30. But more or less, everybody commutes.
