I have to write a research paper on it, and I'm having some trouble finding sources. Anyone know of an excellent book on it or a great website?

I don't of great sources...but I do know it has to do with the crusades. Europeans found all these wonderful new things (silk, spices, etc.) for sale in the middle east and the trade routes were horribly slow. Plus each country wanted to get their own trade route to the goods and control it so they could make a fortune. The search for trade routes because the period of exploration, and the rest is history (to use the old cliche).

You could try google or a history textbook (European History) or check your local library for books on the period.

I would focus on relegious influences. It is still evident today. Makes for a good compare and contrast paper. Good luck.

Yes I've been trying to write on some of the religious influences because I already wrote on the trade issues. I just can't find much that explains how religion was a motivation. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places? Dunno.

TheBoyBlunder has the right idea, Europeans were trying to find a quick route to Asia basically.

the fourth G........ greed! hehe ya I know the reasons, it's just I need a book or good website that has a lot so say on it. If this were a normal 1 or 2 page essay I would have no trouble going on about the 3 or 4 Gs, but I can't just talk for a longer paper. Well I take that back, I could, but I need a good grade on this. :D

Europe was coming out of the Dark Ages, and things were looking up. There was an increasing population and a shortage of resources was beginning to happen. Europe turned outwards and realized that wealth awated them elsewhere. Gold and spices lured them. Countries did not want to be the last to acquire wealth and resources. That way would lead to ruin. So, the Dutch, French, English, Spanish and others competed with each other for booty and territory. BTW, so you dont look silly, it had nothing to do with religion. Dont try to make it out to be. Once colonies were established THEN the Catholic Church set up missions, but that was result, not cause.
