Anyone still using Gentoo?

Actually, that's one of my favorites. I don't tend to uninstall, so I can't say I've run into this one much. I've had some dependency issues with transcode where it doesn't merge the dependencies needed by transcode. This may be a fault of portage, it may be a fault of the ebuild maintainers.

My second desktop pc here is currently running a copy of Vista Home Premium, but I'm not doing a whole lot with the machine currently, so I'm debating wiping it and installing some distro of linux for general purpose use. About six years ago I was using Gentoo for the purpose of learning more about linux, but since the advent of Ubuntu it seems to have fallen out of favor. However, I remember it looking and working well so long as you get past the idea that you have to compile everything yourself every time you want to update anything or install new software.

Good idea? Bad idea? Ugly idea?

For new people, I would not suggest that they install Gentoo as you need to know more than

1) put in the CD and reboot the machine
2) process the install
3) Uses the system

Because that does not happen with the gentoo. You need to know the "configuration options" for each application (or just take the defaults and later find that several applications need to be re-compiled to change the "use flags" to activate the desired feature).

Unbuntu workd well for those that only want a minimal number of choices for a particular type application (as others are not in the Unbuntu package and those users do not take the time to learn to compile a source tar-ball distribution of an application package).
