Is anyone out there using a 486 for anything of real use? We still use a 486DX2 66 w/ 8mb ram and win 3.11 at my job. All the PC does is duplicate CD's and the config. has not changed on this PC since 1994. Since that time over 12,000 CD's have been burnt. The burner is a Yahmaha 4x built in 1994. The whole system cost over $10,000 in april of 94. Even today, the PC still burns 3-5 CD's a day with no problems.

Using a AMD 486 DX2 66 still (one of my many AMD systems), with Win 3.1... Use is mainly as a backup computer, and for exploring all those great DOS games LOL!

Cheers

Was running a 486DX2 for a bootp server. It ran Win 3.1. It was used for config files for old cable modems. The machine is still running for the same purpose but a motherboard failure resulted in a new pentium 133 motherboard/CPU combo.

Where I worked a year ago, I had to use a 286 to write my letters on - the program they had used for the last 15 years had all the letters, and client summaries indexed and archived.

The software company had since gone out of business, so were not able to offer updates. The program used a proprietary hardware encryption device to protect its database, and this was not compatible with newer systems. Hence there was no way to upgrade.
