I'm taking a stroll down memory lane and remembering fondly the days of MIDI soundtracks in games.... anyone ever upgrade their SoundBlaster16 with one of those Roland or Yamaha MIDI daughterboards?

*sigh* Wish I still had mine... noone is selling any.

And for MIDI soundtracks, there've been some good ones but NONe could beat LucasArts' TIE Fighter! The music was so totally dynamic, changing with every minute detail.... you just can't get that from prerecorded digital audio!

:)

Yes plenty of them mostly external tone generators.

The Yamaha 1000SWXG was (is) a VERY nice PCI interface. Still find them on ebay.

Still have my Yamaha. It's on a AMD 300 Mhz and I think an SB 16? (Might be a Turtle beach, been a long time)

I still have a glorious old Roland MT-32 external MIDI generator. It has been sitting on a shelf now for over 10 years - it made some great sounds.

I miss the old school sound cards. I had an ISA sound card that had ide, scsi, sony, and mitsumi connectors. (I think the last 2 were using some kind of proprietary connection at the time) and it was freaking huge, like some scsi raid card or something. Such memories.

Yep. Still have my MT-32 as well (in the form of the CM-64).

Wing Commander 1 and 2 were just awesome! :D

Wow, brings back memories. I remember my first Gravis Ultrasound Max with the 1MB memory upgrade. Then I got the Yamaha DB50XG to go with mySB16ASP. It's still in one of my rigs hooked onto either a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz or a Diamond Monster Sound MX300.

I still have every sound card I ever bought (MANY). I still have the first SB card. The first Adlib card, SB-Pro (stereo, wohoo!), SB-pro with the 3 dif CD connectors, anyone remember the SB-pro with (cant remember the name) but it came with a socket and a chip to get some 3d sound? Something with a dot in the logo, anyway, I still have it, got a midi daughter board for that, I still have my Disney external sound thingy, SB AWE32, SB AWE64 gold, first SB16, SB16 5.1, Audigy1, Audigy2, Audigy2 ZS (best one ever) and up to my POS X-FI.

Wow! I'm trying to find one of those wavetable daughterboards for actual use right now - as well as an original Sound Blaster that still has the icky "Game blaster" chips intact.

Yamaha had an XG50 "wave blaster" compatible board that would fit the headers on a SB16 card. Huge improvement in GM especially if you were using Creative's FM synthesis was was BAD even when the player was drunk. ;)
