Anyone still gaming happily on an older/low end card?

One of my mates survived until just the other day on a fx5200, and i can remember being mega impressed when he got his fx5200, because i still had a gf4 mx440 😱 (I sold him my old 9550, which at stock speeds is a total dog, but a 9600XT speeds it's pretty A-OK for 1024 in most games even today...)

happily? no. gaming? yes. (9500pro)

nothing low end about that mate 😉

what if it's paired with an xp2500 and 512 ram?

😉 i'm running a 2.1GHz tbred and 1gb of ram here...but my 6600GT is still the bottleneck in most games...at the highest playable settings of my 6600GT i'd see little benefit out of a faster cpu/mem.

Yep. I'm still using my Ti4600. The funny thing is I'm currently running WoW at 1920x1200. 😛

Yea yea I know, the frame rate sucks bad, (8-16 fps, no AA or AF) but I'm completely used to it and it rarely bothers me.

If the 6800GS comes out in AGP, I'll finally upgrade. Ya think I'll see much of a difference? 😛

I had a 9200 throughout college, got a 9600xt this year for $50. No problems with any of the games I play (mostly hs2, dod:s) at 12x9 medium settings

Several monthes ago, one of my friends was still gaming on a AMD64 3400+ and 1GB of RAM but still only has a TI4200 . . . he could still run CSS @ 12x10 though with low settings . . . anyway, he was much happier when I sold him my 9800XT (which allowed me to get a 6800GT for my AGP system) . . .

My brother has a TI4200...and hes happy with it...

Im on a MX4000 PCI and Im impatiently waiting for my GS to arrive on thursday !!! 😉

I just posted about what card I can get to upgrade my FX5200 in my Dell Dimension 4600.

Currently I've been mostly playing BF2 and it works ok...but you can't see as far as other people which puts you at a distinct disadvantage.

Anyone got suggestions on a decent card for not too much $ i can pop into my Dell?

ive got a GF3 ti-200........fanless beast from a dell! 64mb of ram too. still plays all the UT's admirably, even trudges through the first splinter cell relatively easily too.

i dont use it for much though, ive had a 9500pro->6800GT->2x7800gt's in SLI so 😀

my bro uses the 9500pro now, plays WoW, Guild wars, CS:S at 10x7 with light aa and af just fine.

My little sister is still happily gaming on the old dell - p4 1.6, 256mb pc133 ram, gf2 mx sdr. Ah, for the kiddie games she plays, it makes no difference.

When I built my A64 3500 system six months ago, my plan was to get a temp PCIe card to hold me over a month or two until the next gen was cheap. Got a Gigabyte 6600 refurbed from newegg for $60. Plans changed. Card clocks easy to 550/700 and am getting 40-60 FPS in WOW in 1280X1024 at max settings with AA. Since it's the only game I play right now, getting anything more powerful would be a waste.

Shooter players that enjoy the latest titles like FEAR need high end. MMPRPGers that play EQ2, WoW, or single player RPGs are for the most part as well off with low end as the highest end card. WoW looks and plays identicle on my $60 6600 then on my friend's 2X 7800Gtx SLI.

One caveat. If you use a low end card, get something that overclocks good and OC it to the hilt. The benefit of a cheap card is the risk/reward of OC goes up.

I'm playing HL2 and CS Source on a Radeon 8500 64MB ddr special edition thingy. I run an average of 25-45 FPS, but when lots of people are around, or I get FB'ed, it sometimes drops to about 15FPS. This is 800x600 no AA/AF, medium/high settings.

Still got a Ti 4400 in action. It plays things like Serious Sam 1.5, Max Payne 2, RTCW, Homeworld2, Icewind Dale 2, AVP2, Soldier of Fortune 2, PSX/SNES emulation just fine.

After I did some major tweaking and overclocking, it'll do HL2 1024x768 @ 2xAA 4xAF with mostly high detail (DX8 path) 25-35 fps. ~20,000 on Aquamark. Sad that my lappy outclasses it so much, though, with ~50,000.

Uhhh, I had that before I got my new computer.....im spoiled by the graphics now lol. Whenever I go to my friends house and play a game, the Aliasing drives me nuts, but i dont say anything lol.

Popped my old 9000 Pro into my wife's HP a230n and she's playing Sims 2 at 1024x768 with medium settings and loving it. She also plays KOTOR 1 sometimes, albeit at 8x6 with med. settings. For the games she plays and with her "skill level" it's the perfect card.

Was gaming happily on a ti4400 until recently, then it died on me. Ran out and threw a 5200fx in the system. Sucks. Was the ti4400 actually a better card than the newer 5200fx?

By far the TI 4400 is superior ... even a 4200 is superior to that crap... :s

Yes, the old ti4400 was better. In fact, pretty much any decent card is better than a FX card.

Yeah FX5200 was indeed the sh/t . . . even the FX5600 was just barely better than the TI4200 . . .
