I'm flying out for a conference in October and need a place to stay for a Saturday night only. If it is less than $200 my company will cover it. I'm staying at the Mirage the other days I'm out there but they were booked the night I need.

The Orleans hotel looks reasonable and the reviews I have found have been favorable, plus it is close to the Mirage.

Anyone have any experience with this one? Any other reasonable possibilities? Most of the strip is actually booked or out of my price range.

Never stayed there. It's most definitely not one of the more upscale hotels in that part of the Strip if the exterior and casino area is anything to go by. But the location is perfect. Right in the middle of everything.

I stayed at the Orleans for a week in July. It's an OK hotel, but you have to take a shuttle or cab to the strip. The rooms were nice and it is definitely cost-effective. I'd just as soon stay at the Excalibur, which is at least on the strip and can be relatively cheap.

The poker room is full of jackpot-chasing locals who all know each other and the dealers. The casino was OK, and the cocktail waitress are some of the best-dressed in Vegas. :D

Orleans is not close to the Mirage.

It is at least a mile or two west of the strip. Not considered within walking distance.

Other than that, it is ia nice place.

It's not bad. Don't eat at the prime rib place there though, stale bread, dry meat, and drinking water with what smells like ten times the amount of chlorine you can safely have in your swimming pool. Take the free shuttle to their sister casino the Barbary Coast, their restaurant was worlds apart. Fresh bread right out of the oven, the prime rib was perfect, the water didn't have the heavy chlorine, and the waitstaff was absolutely on the ball.

Their breakfast buffet was decent, and I would have even paid for it had the pit boss not done so for having to close down the roulette table I was having my winning streak at, since I was the only patron on it.

The shuttle to the Barbary Coast is your best bet for easy Strip access, don't accidentally get on the one to the Gold Coast.

Mpitts is right about the locals. There was a Russian guy at my Blackjack table, and he was basically calling out what the dealers' hands were going to be, and he was right more often than not. He was helping anyone there that would accept his help, and the dealers didn't seem to mind.

Eaglekeeper: as I understand Vegas)never been there), 'close' is a relativie term because the blocks are nearly a mile long.

Thanks for the tips others.

ShotgunSteven has the right idea about the Barbary Coast shuttle for an easy ride to the Strip.

I'd like to add that I owned a house near Flamingo and Buffalo (not far from the Orleans) back in '95-'97 and the area isn't near as nice as it used to be. I was there in July and I stayed in the Orleans for a night (it's not a bad hotel at all) but the area immediately around it is a little "unsavory" at night. Just be careful after sundown - quite a few interesting looking folks in the area of Flamingo and Arville (the SE corner of the property).
