The state of Sweden is voting about passing a law that allows FRA (~ corresponding to NSA) to monitor mail traffic that passes the Swedish border. Officially they claim that the law is necessary to fight terrorism (as usual). Apparently, they are to be allowed to read all email regardless of whether the subject is suspected of any crime. Further, no other agency will monitor how this information is used, the FRA will do that themselves, and they *promise* not to miss use it. .
According to some sources with insight in intelligence work, the motive is to be able to trade information with other states. From what I understand, substantial amounts of Russian traffic passes through Sweden and can thus be bartered.
The law is very controversial and has been criticized both inside and outside Sweden. Apparently, Google says the will never place a server in Sweden if the law pases. Riksdagen (~the parliament) is voting 18/6.
