Anyone shipped anything at a UPS outlet this week? Interesting changes...

I just went down to my local UPS location to ship out a package this afternoon. I was surprised when I walked in to see those double copy forms you fill out replaced with three shiny new Win2K terminals with a small label printer! It was soooooo much nicer. You can sign on as a guest, or setup an user ID and password if you ship a lot. I set one up so I can just head over, sign in, fill in the info, print the label and viola!

They also told me there was no need to label the package at all anymore.

A little funny side story...

When I walked in, there was three or four older people there shipping stuff out. They were all completely thrown off by the change, and were all treating the PC's like they were evil and refused to use them. I just sorted of figured it out after a few seconds, went to the PC's and did the new procedure. While I was typing in my info, I could hear some of them muttering things like, "He knows what?s going on...he must come here all the time."...or "Look at that guy, he probably works here."...LOL. :D

Anyways...the woman at the counter said they were just put in Monday, and all US locations should have them now. I imagine they were installed over the weekend.

Just an FYI!

yeah, I saw the samething about two months ago at the UPS location near my apartment. Go in and see the new setup. Get to work on the computer. Old people come in and want the lady working the counter to ship a package. She tells them they have to use the computer. They at least tried it but obviously have never used a mouse. The lady working had to end to doing it for them.

At least they aren't holding themselves back when it comes to technology. I can now ship packages much quicker now.

It was a UPS distribution center where I go to ship my stuff.

Yeah, I figured being up here in New Hampshire...others places would get it first. I try to only ship from the UPS places since some of the other places like to add on a fee.

If you think old people hate those machines, you should see them or hear them when they see U-Scan terminals (self checkout). I heard nothing but bitching and moaning from day one when I worked for Kroger...

The sad part is that my mom probably wouldn't be able to do it. She has a personal computer but she has to be told how to do stuff. She doesn't experiment to figure things out.

She works on a computer everyday also, it just happens to be command line based. The mouse gave her the hardest time when we got her a PC.

Office Depot (here in Indy) has had those for at least a year now... Staples still uses the paper forms (then they type it in a computer - apparently they don't trust the customers to type it in themselves!)
