Anyone set up a home theater greater than 5.1?

I have a 5.1 home theater setup at home. However, my receiver is capable of up to 7.1, with additional rear speakers. However, something I read awhile ago suggested that I stick with 5.1 since movies are optimized for that setup. Has anyone set up something greater than 5.1 and noticed a positive difference in sound?

Listen to 7.1 every day at work, and it is awesome.

You can pick up a couple more speakers pretty cheap. Try it out.

Yeah I'm considering moving my current center channel to the back and buying a better quality center. I don't know if I'd do 7.1 though.

I am intrigued as to what job you do that lets you hear 7.1 systems at work. :)

Sundays are just aweful...we have to watch the NFL games on all the HD Widescreens....I just hate my job

Cool. So do people really buy big screen TVs around this time for the Superbowl, only to return them a few days after the game?

they can try, but we don't let them. Just to burst everyone's bubble, there is no "3 day law". There is one, but it doesn't really apply to retail places or car lots. I did hear about this one guy at Circuit City. He would buy a big screen and a surround sound then exchange it right before the 90 days were up. He did this for a long time, then we got hit with a blizzard that paralyzed everthing. He missed the 90 days by like one day. The guys there just smiled and sent him on his way. He was beyond pissed. Served him right though.

I've got a 7.1 system, Denon 3801. DTS-ES is amazing, especially Gladiator, during the chariot scene.

I have 7.1 also... although not as cool as your guys setups i fear. HK AVR-325 with a Fluance SX-HTB set (5.0) plus a Fluance SV-6 set (2.0) plus an SVS PB-10. I was originally just going to get a 5.1 set but when I ordered my SX-HTB set, they were backordered, so I got a SV-6 set so I could have 2.1 until my 5.0 arrived. I hope that made sense.

Anyway... I think it adds a little, but you could definately do without it. I agree there are a few scenes where it's really neat to hear things right behind you (like a couple scenes in the matrix trilogy) but I could do without it.

I agree that if you can find some cheap set of speakers, try it out and see if you think it adds to the experience. I don't think it can hurt.

superbowl was broadcast in 5.1

True, but most movies are made 5.1 as well, which was why I posted the original question, as to whether it's worth it to go beyond 5.1, since receivers are capable of making 5.1 sound play from a 6.1 setup.
