Anyone set up a college fund?

I was looking into college funds for my kid and the 529 plans look to be the way to go. Thing is the one for NJ (NJBEST) seems to suck with high fees and low returns. Also NJ offers no tax break for using it.
I'll be checking with my bank to see what they offer. If that ends up nowhere, I'll probably check out the ones recommended here.
