Anyone sell computers? What is the average markup on PC parts?

title says all.

Father mentioned opening an Apple store because they cannot compete against one another in costs AFAIK. I don't think it is worthwhile for him to even simultaneously try in the PC market (should stick to Apple).

I don't see what the title and the post you mentioned relate....

The average markup is about 30% for resellers...some buy cheaper of course.....the 'average' price is usually a well known figure. If you are not able to hit that at 30% you are buying to high to be profitable in the long run.

Upper echelon stores may make about 50% and still be below average price. Volume is a wonderful thing.

I too am hopelessly confused. Mac's suck and the market is too cut-throat for anyone to seriously try to be a whitebox manufacturer and make money at it....

The big computer hardware: PC's, Laptops, .... runs from 2-10%

The little junk is what pays the bills, cables and doodads have huge markup and extended warrantys are pure profit

True, but most 2-10% vendors are marking up shipping GROSSLY.....

The BIG guys can do 2-10% effectively, but they are really making more than that with volume discounting and the like.

$1000 to $2000

Edit: Depending on parts and what price range the company is targeting

Yeah I'd say the same....it's true you have some price leaders and price losers in any business...but for most they want at least 1/3 in profit.

You have to account for shipping errors, charge backs, returns, etc...if you aren't making at least a 1/3 and it's your main income source you are going to be paying to be in business.
