Went to the liquor store tonight and saw something that I don't agree with. They now scan your ID like a credit card. Gives them all your personal information registered with the DMV. Turned me away from making any more purchases with them. Walmart and the grocery stores don't do this so they get my business now.

Your thoughts?

I haven't seen that anywhere around here but I'm with you, I wouldn't shop there either.

I can't think of any reason that this would be necessary.

Yeah and? I don't use my CC at the liquor store. There is no reason why a liquor store needs that information.

Not true. I know for a fact that it provides the personal information mentioned above.

probably provides birtdate, as well as home address, maybe even home phone. until about 3 years ago, my state also used your SSN as the drivers license ID#... thats a bit much for a 40 of OE :p

Guess I would have had problems since I do not allow them to print my SSN on my license.

I've had my lD scanned a few times with the machine you mentioned. And truthfully now that I'm over 21 (turned 22 this may) I couldn't care less. I actually get a kick when liquor store clerks or bouncers check on my ID. All I have to do is just stand there and say with full 100% confidence.... yeah I'm 21 whats it to you? Got any Everclear:p

Just to clear things up, scanning a driver's license does not give them "all the information registered with the DMV". Most states in the US follow the same format on the mag-stripe, on which is encoded: Name, address, license number, exp date, date of birth, sex, height, weight, eye color, and hair color....in other words, the same stuff that's on the front of the license. So really, they're not getting any new information off of you that they couldn't get by reading the front, which they probably do anyways. The information there is mostly to cut down on the cheaper fake id's that don't take the effort to encode the information.

Bingo. Believe me, the liquor store really doesn't care about you or your information, they just don't want to sell to minors.

Many buildings are now doing this as well or they will not let you in, such as Hospitals, Offices etc.

Logan's Run.

COOL IT. The information contained in the magnetic stripe on my Michigan drivers license is (as stated ON the license) date of birth, license number and expiration date.

The state isn't stupid enough to engorge privacy zealots like you by putting your name and address on those magnetic stripes. Hell, the liquor store is probably getting LESS info from the magnetic stripe than if they actually LOOKED at the info. Your name isn't even in the stripe!

Yeah... The stripe just carries enough info to allow cops to compare your mug to the ID in case the front of the ID is forged.

Some banks use the data now as well. :(

The casino in New Orleans swipes them too. Who cares? Maybe one day we'll have beer vending machines that'll let you swipe your id for a beer...that would be awesome. :)

Is there a law prohibiting them from using the information to send you unsolicited mail? I guess we'll find out when all you guys start getting mail from the local liquor store :D

they have those swipe machines at clubs here in Toronto...
It's to cut down on minors gettin in. I don't think there is any additional info besides what's on the front of the Drivers licences anyway..
And all the Liquor stores and beer stores in Ontario are run by the gov't anyway so they probably have access to the info anyway..

Move to a state where the licenses don't have magnetic strips on the back, like Maryland.

I am pretty sure there are two types of machines that you are talking about. One just scans the back of your license and spits out your age and birthday. The other machine gives a full read out of what is printed on your license. It does not link up with the DMV unless its a machine in say, oh, a police department. This is done mostly to stop underage people from buying alcohol. Only good fakes are encoded with this information, and in a state like New York, you can alter the birthdate on your license with just some colored pencils. It's just to keep underage people from buying - no need to worry they are taking your information! :)

Hey, if the liquor store wants to start sending me coupons for booze, I really don't mind. ;)

Even though I think you can't give discounts on alcohol...
