i saw it on tv this weekend for the first time and was kinda WTF at the end of it. the message i got from it is basically that ipads are for gay people and kindle fires are for straight people. it just seemed like a very odd way to advertise that can be seen as controversial.

these types of things don't really bother me or anything, i was just surprised that amazon would go to this level of advertising.

I also saw the commercial on TV, but did not even remotely get the same message that you got out of it.

That's not inaccurate :^D

Don't overthink it. It's just a commercial with a surprise ending. You can only do so much in 30 seconds.

The point of the end was that you were led (kind of, it isn't very long) to think that maybe the guy with the ipad was hitting on the girl, and then you find out he has a husband.

OP is reading too much into it. It's not a good commercial, though. Not very funny, though I guess at least they get across the point that you can read the paperwhite Kindle on the beach in bright sunlight.

yeah i got that point about reading and the kindle screen works in the sunlight. definitely not looking into this too much at all. i saw it once and was like 'wow that is kind of whack they are saying ipads are for gays'.

I didn't perceive it the way the OP did, but I also don't see the point of specifying that he is gay in this commercial. How is that relevant to anything other than to give you a slight surprise that he isn't hitting on the woman?

I feel like they're really trying too hard in that commerical. Way too hard.
Yeah.

yup i agree. that is kind of what the whole gay angle made me think. like what does that have to do at all with anything? as the other guy said, how is that relevant to the message they are trying to send about the kindle being able to be read in the sun? which is why i think they tried to take a jab at apple and say apple is for gays.

It's not relevant, it's just a take on the "she's married", "he's married" already twist.
Which is supposed to be mildly humorous, but doesn't work very well in a commercial where less than 5 seconds is actually used to that end. He could have just as easily been straight and married to a woman who was at the bar, but him being gay is supposed to be a little bit funnier because it would mean that she was potentially "barking up the wrong tree".

The fact that he is gay or she is straight has no bearing on the devices they used or vice-versa, and the fact that anyone would see it that way means Amazon - or whatever agency they used - did a poor job with this commercial.

I already assumed the guy was gay because he noticed the device & not the tits.

That same chick is in a earlier Kindle commercial from last year and also gets hit on at the end. This is just a spin on the earlier commercial.

I haven't seen it, but the fact of the matter is, the iPad stomps the Kindle Fire into the ground. There really isn't a contest.

I'm as anti-Apple as they come, and even I know that and ended up buying an iPad over a Fire.

That's not a kindle fire, it's a kindle paper white. The point of the commercial is that you can read the kindle paper white just like a real book, while the other device is so glossy, you'll have trouble reading it in direct sunlight, even if it has retina display.

To touch on that, the biggest argument I've heard (and even made) about using the iPad as reading device is the fact that you can read it in the dark. The point of the commercial was to emphasize that she could read it both during the day, and at night.

Y'all over-complicate this.

They wanted you to think that he was hitting on the woman at first. If he had said something like "Oh so is my wife" at the end it would have accomplished the same thing, but would have made for a bland commercial that would quickly fall from memory. Now it's a bland commercial that you will remember for one reason.

The point is you can get a Paper White even if you have a IPad. I know many people who do. If you a frequent reader, reading on even the IPad can be a pain. Nothing beats the Paper White for simply ereading books.

^This. The guy gets a kindle at the end so that kinda makes OP's point moot.
