Anyone seen new Samsung 17" LCD 171P Syncmaster yet?

This is supposed to be the top 17" LCD for the next 6 months... has response time of under 25ms... has a 500:1 contrast ratio and a blazing 300 n brightness rating. Supposed to absolutely rock for gaming. I am tempted to order one (one place shows having it in stock but hasn't responded to my email yet) but am afraid it will actually suck (I am picky about things like ghosting, etc). Supposedly they are now showing up in stores... anyone seen one.

You know, I think I'm going to take the plunge and order one of these sight unseen... noone around here stocks crap for LCD's, so if I wait for a local retailer I will likely be waiting forever. I will report back here and let everyone know what I think of it when I recieve the unit and evaluate it.

Well it turns out that the site I ordered it from was confused and did not have the 171p (they had an older version, the 171t). Noone has this in stock yet so it looks like I will still be waiting.

Yes, I'm interested in one of these also. Monitor outlet should be getting the 171P in the next week or two, they have the 151P now. The digital in cable connector is DVI-D, what video card will you be using?

Just FYI, I called Samsung 3 weeks ago and they said the 15inch would ship last week (it did) and the 17inch would ship sometime before the end of the month. I may go with the 15inch. I now have a 19inch monitor and would like the 17inch but its just to much money for me. The 15 inch is almost as big screen wise as my wifes 17inch monitor so I can live with that. Just thought I would let you know what Samsung told me on the dates.

Thanks very much... after reading about the night and day difference that Mitsubishi's new forward feeding technology will make in response times I think that it makes more sense to wait 6 months and get a display that includes the new technology.

I would feel like a real ass if I bought a $800-$900 screen and there was one out by Xmas that was capable of 100fps in action games (with 25ms pixel average response times the best possible framerate of current LCD's is more like 30 fps).

Having said that I'm sure that the new Samsung is the best available.

I have bumped down the resolution on my Samsung 955df to 1152X864 at 85hz and will use that to relieve eye-strain until the new forward feed technology LCD's become available.

Shouldn't a DVI-I card work with a DVI-D monitor?

Oh, I just that it accepts a digital signal input as opposed to analog. BTW Monitor Outlet now has them in stock for $959.00

Um, so is that a yes or a no? I understand the difference between DVI-I and DVI-D, but can a DVI-I card run a DVI-D monitor? I would assume yes since it's just the extra analog pins that are missing on the DVI-D.

What makes you think the FFD will a) be out by Christmas, and b) be 'affordable when it arrives? So far all the latest tricks arrive in the biggest screens first, and hot new tech is at a premium for the first few months. So even if FFD is out for Christmas, don't be surprised if it is only available in 20" screens for $3000...and reaches the 17" affordable level a year after that.

the FFD screen technology was announced for 1st quarter of this year... even though they won't make it out this quarter I would be surprised if it wasn't available by Xmas. Probably the biggest holdup is licensing it to the other LCD manufacturers.... supposedly the FFD is so revolutionary they will all want to bring it out.

Since the FFD technology works with current screens, and is nothing more than different circuitry to calculate pixel on/off times I honestly can't see it being any more expensive than screens are today.

For those of you that where going to order from Monitor Outlet for $959. Try www.jandr.com for $899.99, but not in stock yet.
Oh there's a quick review at PCMag.com, but it isn't very informative, it was awarded the Editor's Choise, but they mention motion blur as typical, shouldn't be for <25ms average response time.

HardOCP just did a big review of some Microtek screen... the guy made a short video of it and insists that it's free of motion blur. It's a 17" 1280X1024 display with 250 nits brightness, 400:1 contrast ratio and sells for $599.

Sorry, it wasn't hardocp but another hard-ware site! ;)

Hardcoreware review linky

PS, I went and looked at this screen at Office Depot today... but couldn't get a good feel for it as it was hooked up to one of those crappy signal splitters running at the wrong resolution... I opted not to buy it until I can see it running native resolution.

Also, there is no published spec for it's pixel response time which is usually a bad indicator.

As to the dvi-i / dvi-d thing, My Viewsonic VG191B is dvi-d, and it runs fine off my Geforce3 TI500 with both the analog and dvi connectors plugged in.

Has anyone got this monitor yet???
I'm VERY tempted to go ahead and order it from monitoroutlet!

The pcmag review states that it has "average ghosting" ????
I thought a display with specs this good wouldn't have this problem.
Mostly all Samsung current models don't have that problem.

Anywone seen one?

J&R does sell it for $899 but it's not in stock AND they get you on shipping. it's $48 I believe.
monitoroutlet sells it for $959 but with free shipping.
Not much difference.

It's already being tested for tv screens. So far nobody has been impressed.
This was announced a long time ago, not just the beginning of this year.
The reason its not out is because they haven't got it down yet. So don't hold your breath.

I would also take that review of the Microtek with a grain of salt.
I don't think the reviewer has had much experience with flat panel's.

You won't see ghosting on most monitors with something like 3dmark. Its a nice slow moving screen.
You will in something that is really dark and light, and with quick movements.

That's why a high contrast ratio is so important. Like what the Samsung has.

I've seen the Microtek in action and there are much better buys out there.

I know this is just my 1st post:)
But anyone know why the dot pitch on the 151 is higher then 171? Isthis just a marketing ploy for us to spend 400 more? does dot pitch mean that much in lcds? I really just need the 151 but if I have to get the 171p for the .264dot pitch. Anyone tested monitoroutlet's return policy? I want to be able return my lcd back if it even has one dead pixel in just the right place.

btw I tried the rad 5 and it had a .30 dot pitch didn't seem bad but returned casue of the ghosting and didn't like how it just looked too :)

Welcome to Anandtech.

I'm not sure about the dot pitch specification for LCD's... maybe someone more informed can answer that.

I totally understand about the burned out pixel thingy... I bought an LCD (that I later returned) that had a pixel stuck to blue right in the middle of the screen (and right near my aiming crosshair in Cstrike)... that for $800? No thanks!!!!!

ugh... doesn't look like it... and still no reviews... it would be great if Anandtech reviewed this extremely hyped product though so that we don't all blow our dough for nothing.
