It was not that bad!! It was the most fun I've had at the movies in a long time.

Some of the surf scenes were outstanding... the photography put you right in the middle of someplace I'll never go (in the middle of north shore big waves). They got some of the shots from bodyboarder Mike Stewart who would paddle into places no other human on earth could get to with a camera balanced on his board.

Now kami, go start your own LOTR tribute thread and quit farting in mine! :p

Read again. I didn't start the LOTR discussion. By my count there's 3 posts before mine that did :p

Ebert and Roeper both liked it. Which is pretty astounding.
Of course, Ebert concluded his review by saying it was "the best fictional surfing movie" he'd ever seen. That's like saying Nutella is less fattening then peanut butter--not hard to accomplish.

OTOH, a movie about girls surfing doesn't sound too terrible. I'll probably rent it. My biggest gripe is that they waited until the END of the summer to release it. I figured it would amount at least to a lot of advertising for Roxy and would probably result in an upswing in the female surfing population, but not this late in the season...

The problem with that is you lose the scale of the waves. Surf films are made for the big screen. I have Endless Summer 2 on video and can watch it over and over again, but it's a pale comparison to the experience I had seeing it in a theatre on a big screen.

I think I may go see Blue Crush again this week. I liked it that much.

When I want to watch big wave surfing I rent a surfing vid. When I want to see T&A I watch prOn or wait for the mrs. to get out of the shower If I want to see some cheesey a$$ lamer movie about about surfing I can rent North Shore or Beachblanket Bingo
The two best surfer movies IMHO are "Endless Summer" (duh) and "Big Wednesday". Big Wednesday has Gary Busey, William Katt and Jan Michael Vincent. Plus Gerry Lopez as himself!

"I'm just a garbage man" - Bear from Big Wednesday.

I enjoyed seeing the waves on the big screen, it really allows you to see the waves. I was pretty dissapointed in that a lot of the surfing scenes I thought it was pretty easy to see the professionals taking the place of the actresses, especially on the big waves. Noah Johnson is a good surfer, even in a wig, heh. :)

Actually most of those replies just said it didn't suck as bad as they thought it would or that they were all for anything that helps the industry ;) BTW, I've been surfing over 20 years and have never lived more than 5 miles inland in my entire life, but that doesn't mean I have to embrace every attempt at a mainstream movie centering on the surf culture ;) I will give it the benefit of a doubt and watch it on DVD when available, happy? For what it's worth, I've seen a huge influx of girls in the line up in the last 5 years and I think it's great! My wife has been surfing even longer but hasn't had mch time for it the last 2 years between work and parenting, I'm pretty much a weekend warrior now for the same reasons :( Anyways, I agree with Shagger's picks for great mainstream offerings, and I would add Endless Summer II and In God's Hand's to the list of films that as Butthead would say "do not suck" :)

I'd rather see Swimfan (hotter girls more plausible plot, ok barely) than Blue Crush.

I don't know much about surfing, but I think if you are into it this movie would be better than Blue Crush

Step Into Liquid

That movie looks darn cool....can anyone here tell me more about supertanker surfing? What's up with that?

That looks like an awesome movie. Hopefully if Blue Crush makes some money, Step Into Liquid will have a easier time getting released into theatres. The website said it is supposed to be out this summer.

All large vessels create a bow wave as they pass through the water. Dolphins frequently pace the boats by riding that wave underwater, I assume they are surfing that bow wave...

I don't know. I saw her in Girlfight last night. That's the kind of mean chick I need in my life.
