My work is seriously thinking about running a Citrix Server. Were running one now but only 25 users with desktop computers. My boss is wanting to run a Citrix Server on a Compaq 2500 server for 150 users and install most of our apps on it. Also wanting to replace the computers in the field with terminals. Anyone have any experinse with a Citrix servers with 150+ users? If so how do you like it? I like Citrix myself and the shadow feature is pretty cool. What I dont like is we only have a 56K Frame Relay Cloud and Im wondering how slow it will run accross it! I seems to run very good accross it believe it or not now. But once we get more people switching over I would think it would run very slow. I also heard the rule of thumb is to run 32 megs per user in the server; does that sound right?

WOW!

32 megabytes RAM per user is correct. I also belive the bandwidth requirements are 32 kbits/sec per user. That 56 Kbit frame relay is not going to cut it. 150 users? Better think quad zeon 800 processor machine with many gigs of RAM. Compaq 2500 will NOT be able to handle that kind of load. If I remember sizing reqs correclty you shouldn't put more than ten users per processor. For 150 simultaneous users you'd need many servers. Please ask your boss what kind of experience they have with citrix installations because it is obvious they have never touched it before. I've run citrix farms for hundreds of users and the one thing I've learned is don't disobey the GODDAM#ed recommendations of the people who wrote the software.

Anyone want to sound off on windows terminal server? shadow07?

But for god's sake don't do what you're proposing. You'll never get any sleep.

They had some guy come in and talk to my boss about all the requirements. I wasnt in that day or I would of sat in on the meeting also. I like Citrix and wouldnt mind running it. But I also dont think our server and Frame Relay will cut it either. I just wanted more advise to see what others think. I built my first Citirx server a few months ago on a NT Terminal Server, with my supervisors help. I really enjoy working with Citrix and it really seems stable and easy options. Thats the reason were wanting to switch over. Our backbone is Novell and were not running Zenworks. Were going to keep our GroupWise/Email system on Novell. Were pretty tired of all the help desk calls and PCs breaking down. Were hopeing going to a Citrix Server will help eliminate these problems. Running all the software at our Central Office. It will be much easier walking into the next room to the server to troubleshoot a software problem. Also going out of town and being on the phone with a help desk call cause some dumb ass lost one of there Icons and dont know the differance between right and left clicking on the mouse button!! Its hard to tell some people in our IT department sometimes; they just wont listen thats why I was getting more advise. Because the way my boss was taking and all information the Citix guy was talking it sounded WAY to easy ;) We know how to build the server. We just dont know the requirments its going to take on the server hardware and bandwidth. Were working with BellSouth now on upgrading our lines. But like all other companys they dont want to send the money!! I will tell you this it really SUCKS trying to copy files accross a 56K line to our other server! :| Its pretty sad I have a faster connection at home then work! ;)

Thanks guys for any information you can give me.

Just an obvservation:

Easier for who? You only. My point being is that if you're having a problem with a centralized app you cause many users to be unproductive instead of just one.

Like I said, just an observation. :)

150 users? You had better think of 4-5 servers of:

Dual P3 900Mhz
2GB RAM
18GB RAID 1 or RAID 5

with Citrix load balancing services, and possibly RMS. Having many servers gives redundancy that two or so uber-boxes can't give.

Also consider having a dedicated machine (highish-end desktop) as a master ICA browser. And depending on how many users are not on the LAN, a MUCH higher bandwidth line. Tell us how many are off-site and how many sites. If your current apps run fine together, things should be OK. You still aren't going to get rid of stupid users though. Unless you plan on replacing PCs w/ thin clients, there's still the local desktop they can play with, umless you're running NT/2000 abnd using mandatory profiles.
