Like the title said Id be intrested in seeing game results if a 5870 or 480 is put in a system running an overclocked q6600 say at 3.2, 3.3
Cant afford changing the board ,cpu ,ram at the moment but am looking at graphics card update and can run to the 480 .
Maybe in 6 months ill have enough for the other components but it may have to stay together for the next 2 years with a new card
i game at 1900x1200
q6600 at 3.2
rampage formula
4 gig dominators at 1066
geforce 8800 gts 512
ps as nvidia have copped on id be keeping the 8800 for physx
720watt Enermax
q6600 is water cooled

Other question is in the future if i cant upgrade the system and went for the 480 or 5870 do ye envisage that i could game reasonably for the next 2 years.

Any and all help appreciated

i have crossfired 5870's witha q6600 at 3.6.

What are you asking for exactly?

Anyhow, the processor will not be a major bottleneck with maxed out settings. Besides, as long as you are over 60 fps what does it matter?

he probably wants to know if that q6600 will end up bottlenecking his gpu... apparently that wont be the case

Long answer is: yes, that q6600 will limit max frame rates in some cases. But not enough to matter since they'll be high enough. I doubt you'd come out ahead buying a "get by for now" card and then upgrading again in six months.

As far as will that GPU still be viable in 2 years -- I'm not completely sure. It's 9 month old technology (the 480 was late, but is on the same level as the 9 month old 5870). The performance gain over the previous generation wasn't that impressive, unlike the 8800GTS 512 in 2007. Combine the two factors I doubt either of these cards will be considered midrange in June of 2012.

thanks for the replies guys
ordering the 480 tonight
yeah at 1920x1200 and with your Q6600 at 3.2 you will be fine. you will certainly not get all 100% that the gtx480 has to offer so you might as well crank the AA whenever possible.

the Q6600 is still a great CPU when overclocked. if you're planning on getting a 480 make sure your PSU is up to the task of running it and your 8800GTS though, as the 480 has a rather high power draw. if you want the 8800GTS for physics and are willing to deal with irregular driver updates and hacked drivers, the 5870 would be just fine. on the flip side, the 480 is so fast that a lot of the games where physics makes any difference are light enough on the GPU that you may be able to run both on just the 480 and not notice the difference. this of course is bound to change though if new games come out
