i encode video a lot and was thinking of getting a laptop. it'll be at load 24/7. will the fan be running all the time then?

anyone run at 100% 24/7? what's it like? what laptop do you have?

I had been running mine at 100% load 24/7 for a few months doing Seti (well, except when I was at school on battery), but haven't been lately. No problems with it. The fan wouldn't run all the time, but quite a bit. This is a Compaq with a 1.6GHz Pentium M.

I used to run my Sager 5680 (2.8ghz P$ w/ 800mhz bus, 512 mb Ram, MR9600 128mb ram) at full load all the time. Play video games during the day, encode at night. Didn't have any problems except it would get hot. No artifacts or crashing problems.

However, the load your laptop can take is directly related to who built it and its design. Some notebooks just start lowering clock speeds when they get blazing hot. My Sager never did, but then again, nothing ever burned out either so its cooling system was adequate.
