After Brooks changed my PureGrit shoe into the PureGrit 2, I've been struggling to find a decent trail shoe. First, I tried the Merrell Mixmasters, but there's simply not enough sole on them. For shorter runs, they're fine, but anything with double digits and my feet and knees experience considerable pain. Toe box is nice and wide though. Then I tried the Saucony Peregrines, I'm loathing these shoes with a passion. The tongues slide out, they collect rocks like a magnet, and they actually tilt inward. That is, when they shoes are sitting on the level floor, they slant/tilt inward. This causes me to roll my ankles constantly, and its really clobbering my already gimpy left knee. For the time being, I've gone back to the Merrells since the heat keeps me in shorter distances anyway.

The Hokas seem to get a lot of positive feedback from pretty much everyone I know wearing them, but they are pricey shoes. 170+ usually. I attempted to try some on this weekend, but they were out of my sizes due to a model refresh coming in next week.

I've been running in the Bondi 2 (whatever the latest version is) for the last 6 months or so. I credit them with allowing me to be able to run again, nearly pain free. I was out of running from summer of 09 from a knee injury. I was running as much as 60-70 MPW prior to my injury. I will never be able to put that mileage in again but am able to do 15-20 MPW along with bike riding, walking and rowing.

I love them. The forefoot of the out sole wore out pretty fast but that hasn't diminished the ride at all. They fit me the same as other running shoes, size wise and toe box.

As a trail shoe you might need some adjustment with the height of the soles though. Great shoe.

Roadrunnersports carries them so if you belong to their club you get 10% off and free shipping.

This kinda mirrors what I've heard from other runners on the trails too. I've a local RRS about 15 minutes away by freeway, so I'd just go there. Which I actually did last weekend, but found them sold out of their trail models due to the model refresh coming in next week.

Bought a pair of Hoka Stinsons last week, have logged 3 runs in them so far, 2 4.6milers and a 9.2miler. Liking them so far, but I'll have to reserve judgement until after I bomb out on a 100K later this month.

Training just hasn't been up to snuff this summer to make me 100K ready. :(
