A good friend and his wife are planning a vacation in June to Alaska. One of the sections of the itinerary is to ride a train from Ketchikan to Fairbanks. They've never been on the train and are trying to find out as much information about the line as possible.

Thanks in advance for any information presented.

I rode a section going opposite direction of that trip a couple summers ago from Denali to Anchorage when my family was up to visit me. We decided to ride the bus up to Denali, stay 3 days, and then take the train back. I can't remember for sure how long the train took. I think the whole day, but it was an amazing trip. The upper deck is where you sit for most of the trip, drinks, alcohol, and light snacks are available. On the train we took the seating was different. It was like a booth at a restaurant that could seat 2-adults on each side or 3-children on each side, and a table between us. However, for the meals, they rotate passengers to the lower dining level with a full menu.

You get to freely walk around. They even have a car that is open to the outside. There are some amazing views, and the family loved it. They also have announcers pointing out stuff and as well as some history.

Did it a couple years ago (Denali-Anchorage, like Bacstar did) and loved it. We tried to get that car for the Anchorage-Denali trip but it was sold out so we rode in the standard coach car.

I did the run from Anch to Fairbanks when I was a kid. It was nice. But I'm pretty sure the train doesn't run out of Ketchikan. Seward maybe?
