My furnace is getting long in the tooth and I'll be replacing it shortly.

Any suggestions on what brand to get?

What about efficiency? I'll probably be in the house another 14yrs so there's a relatively long payback time.

If you'll be there more than 5 years, you should get a high Effeiciency type (upper 90s). Less than 5 and you can get the 80s type since you won't recoup the extra cost.

As for brands, they are all pretty similar. Everyone has their favorites and the kinds they will tell you suck. But just as many people will tell you the same thing in reverse... I'd recommend getting a bunch of free estimates from local places and seeing what they each tell you is the best brand and why. Then compare the quotes, literature, etc and go with something.

Lots of times they have rebates and things at certain times of year too which you can always ask about. But plan on spending $2k - $4k on average...

One other thing is to compare the warranties and see how long the labor and parts are good for. Some are 5year parts, 1 year labor, some are 5/5 or even more.

Go to
www.hvac-talk.com and start reading.

I paid about 2k$ for an american standard (Trane) 90+ furnace installed.
The 90+ units vent with PVC not through the flue.
Also
Get a good load calc done.
Chances are the one you have now is not sized properly

Thanks for the advice I have a Trane a/c and I'm happy with it so I was leaning towards a Trance furance.

You're right, my current furnace isn't properly sized.

American standard makes trane.
A/S costs less

You will have to decide if you need a single stage, two stage or var. speed unit.

Again
Lots of good info on www.hvac-talk.com
The load calc software is there ($50 for thirty days)

There are some vendors selling furnaces on ebay now.

Stay away from the Goodman brand, it's bottom of the line.
