yea, the cheap plastic tiles that are in our kitchen are like peeling up. My mom wants to replace them with wood (but the fake wood, I dont know why) and I told her I would do some research.

Anyone have any good links? How hard is it to do?

I help my brother-in-law put down new wood floors in their home. It was a tongue and grove pre-cut floor. You have to rent the special nail gun and air compressor, to drive flat nails at an angle. You can rent them from home depot. For the first three rows you will also need to have another nail gun to set nails from the top of the boards. Another good thing to have is a table saw rip then very last row.

are you talking about laminate hardwoods?

i laid about 1200 sq feet of them last year in my house. don't need nail guns or anything

you can get them for like $1-2 / sq foot at home depot, ikea, sams club, etc.

just pull up old floor or smooth it out and pound each row together (or snap into place). floating glueless floor so you just need to put up some quarter round moulding around the edges to leave room for expansion and your set. you can even cut the stuff with a jigsaw

I have installed this
on 2 kitchens and a bath. It is beautiful looking, fairly easy to install, and more comfortable than a nailed in place hardwood floor to walk on. Since it is ood it can be sanded 2 times, so it can be down for many years.

If you want a quick and cheap and easy solution, go to Home Depot and get the sticky back vinyl tiles. You can do a 1000SF room in an evening and the only tools you need are some utility scissors and a rolling pin.

They look suprisingly good and are a huge bang for the buck home upgrade.

Yeah, the fake wood flooring is usually laminate, which is "floating" - requires no glue or nails. I did my kitchen a few years ago (I think ~250sf). It's a pretty simple operation except at any corners. Basically, anything you have to make anything other than just an end cutoff is a pain, so if it's a large open area it's not too bad at all. I did it myself and probably did it in 6 hours at a fairly leisurely pace, including molding replacement, etc.

I did my sisters bathroom and kitchen with the fake wood flooring Pergo Flooring which I got from Lowes. The bathroom is actually made to look like a tile, the kitchen was oak. Both went down fairly easily and look incredable. The material is tuff, and looks good, I would suggest it to anyone.

I did 3/4 inch oak hardwood in our family room. I used a manual porta nailer to do it and by the end of the job I was sore in places I didn't know existed. We originally intended to hardwood our kitchen as well but we have decided against it now after seeing how it held up in a neighbors house after 10 years.
