Anyone replace their ipod's hard drive?

i actually swapped a working 15gb drive from a broken ipod into another broken 10gb ipod with a bad drive and got that to work...

good stuff...i don't know how people can live with these new tiny 1gb ipods, i keep dumping stuff onto it and i still have tons of space...i never have to worry about deleting crap...

Will any 1.8" HD work, or do you need a specific one?

Thanks

google is your friend.

I saw that, it doesn't say anything about hard drive compatibility.

Gah!

Look through this store, they have hard drives with model numbers

one of the site i saw suggested that 3rd generation and after can take any 1.8" hd, but others seem to suggest otherwise... i'm wondering if anyone here has actual experience, or can point me to a site with some sort of actual compatibility chart

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I am trying to revive a 4G 20GB iPOD. Can I use any 1.8 hdd, or does it have to be a Toshiba branded drive? TIA.

i believe it can be any drive, considering that with the proper adapter you can even use a 3.5" hard drive.

Hmm really? So if I just wanted to use this adapter, I could turn a 4GB mini into a 160GB mini? That's pretty sweet. I wonder how managable I could make that look.

lol just be warned about the battery life...

Ok, what you need is a toshiba 1.8" drive...

They can be found on ebay. I used to have a few of them but I sold off my hard drive inventory because the hard drives are so damn fragile it's not even funny.

It can't just be any 1.8" drive either, I believe it has to be a toshiba (I've never seen another branded hard drive in any of the iPod's I've worked on.

For the video iPods they have both toshiba and hitachi drives. For ipod mini's they use hitachi and seagate.

hehe... that'd be great when you pull that monster out of your pocket. No, the 3.5 inch would probably need to be plugged in... a few people have made one for their car, or made a sort of ipod home theatre system (probably a little more ridiculous, but if you've got a dead one it might be fun anyway).

Google for Super ipod

is the pin configuration different?

So would this work for an iPod mini? Or even be recommended? Granted I would still keep the old HDD just for safe keeping, but if I can turn it from a 4GB to a 20GB, I'm game.

Edit: Nevermind. I just reread what you wrote on there. I thought you were saying it wouldn't work because it didn't have pins. But yeah, nevermind. ... I should call Super Nintendo Chalmers for some learnding help.

Just go on ebay and get a toshiba drive and swap it out. They aren't that hard to find and if you get it from a reputable dealer they will take it back if it doesn't work.

Toshiba drives are about the only ones that go in 1st - 4th gen iPods. 5th gen (video) uses either toshiba or hitachi drives. iPod mini's use either hitachi or seagate drives.

Lol, the ipod mini is small for a reason. Plus the ipod mini's use CF2 flash drives that don't have pins.
