The other day I was poking through my old DOS game collection and came across one of my favorites, Bane of the Cosmic Forge. That game and its sucessor, Wizardy VII had D.W. Bradley at his best. They had great stroy lines, excellent character development, and awesome loot (I spent days trying to get excalibur in Bane).

Anyone else remember those RPG's Any idea if anyone is making a remake of them or something similar?

I certainly remember the Wizardry series, though I never picked it up for my C64. I liked Bard's Tale better anyway.

In a fit of retro-gaming feverishness I successfully bid on a copy of Wiz 6 from eBay and it was a great game. In terms of any remakes I don't believe there are any. But if you can get a copy of Wizardry 8 it's worth playing and has the flavor of Wiz 6 & 7. DW Bradley didn't work on it AFAIK.

You may want to give the Realms of Arkania Trilogy a try if you haven't already. It's a first person, party-based RPG based on Das Schwarze Auge PnP RPG from Germany. It may very well be my most favorite series of CRPGs.

+1 on Wizardry 8, also iirc there's one named wizards and warriors, a remake? that's good too, the one with the elephant race

I do miss those old school party-based RPGs, like Wizardry 8 and the M&M series (also the Black Isle RPGs). Most nowadays seem to be lone-wolf style (like The Elder Scrolls) or basic hack-n-slash.

The very first RPG I can recall playing was either Wizardry (the first one) or Eamon Adventures (Tomb of something or other).
On the Apple II version of Bard's Tale, you could actually import Wizardry characters. Something goofy happened to the character disk for Wizardry, though, it wasn't readable by the Wizardry game any longer, but I could import one character... that ended up being an archmage for some reason :Q
So I had a party of level 1 chars and someone who could cast every spell in the game :D

anyone remember trying to ID item #9 (hint:there was no item #9) on your new lvl 1 Bishop for the Bazallion XP bug?

Wizard and Warriors was a D.W. game but imo was so bug ridden that it was unplayable.

Yeah, I remember and played the heck out of the realms of arkania games. The more and more I think about it, the more I realize that I loved those games because I used my imagination to create the visual aspect of the world. The gameplay was all important.

I just got the chills remembering how I used to cast level 6 nuclear blast into a battle with 80+ goblins down by the river styx in Bane.

Also, IMO opinion Bane was far better than Wizardy VII or VIII. 8 had better graphics, but the story line just wasn't engaging. VII had a different problem. It had a great stroy, but it took me 5-6 playthroughs to figure it all out because there was so much going on.

Man, I might fire up one Bane tonight and go kill the "fat rat" (the first "boss" character in the game). But of course that will depend on whether I can roll a ninja or monk before the night is through.

Thats it. Wizardy 8 is now back on my PC. Now for some good ol fashioned fighter, ninja, bard, cleric, mage, psionic fun.

Well, I played a few of the old Ultima games, and Ultima V was remade using the Dungeon Siege engine. There's also a remake of Ultima IX called Redemption using the Morrowind engine, been in development for years though. Not sure it will ever be released. :(
