Anyone remember the name of this Windows game?

It was a very simplified version of Master of Orion (from the Civ series). It might've been around as far back as Win 3.1. Basically, it generated a small system of planets and you started on one of them. You would build colony ships and then send them to other planets. If I recall correctly, you could then colonize the planet and use the resources on it. At some point, you could build other ships including warships, and research technology (shields, weapons?). I guess the final goal was to take over the system. You could specify several computer opponents and/or difficulty level. The AI was so-so at best. It was an addictive little game. Anyone remember what I'm talking about? TIA.

i have a game sorta like that at home, i don't recall the title

what was the GUI like? was the screen sorta like a Risk board? like each little territory was split out and you could move so many a turn and only attack adjacent territories?

I remember a game like that where one enemy was a smily face or something. I don't recall the name though.

It was several little windows inside a main window if I recall correctly. The ships you built had these weird animal snouts sometimes which got progressively meaner as your weapons level increased.

EDIT: I don't think it was Star Control. This one was a turn based game similar to the Civ series. It really was a simple little game. 🙂

EDIT2: I think it might be Stars!, which somebody mentioned. Although from googling it, it seems to be a considerably more complex game than I gave it credit for. Thanks for the help all.

You got it right. The OP was most definitely talking about Spaceward Ho! I remember that game. He's charging that much money for the Windows version?!? 🙂

i got it several years back in the bargain software bin at compusa, $5 or $10 i think it was.

Sounds like VGA Planets. Anyone remember that one? I used to play it all the time with other members of our bbs. It was a play by email strategy sort of thing. I was thinking about bringing it back if anyone was interested.

Definitely a cool game, that is what I pictured when I read the post.
